If they lived in Edgbaston where would they be buried?

SarahHolmes

Hi all

I'm trying to track down the burial place of some of my family, so far I'm doing quite well having found a couple at Key Hill and a couple at Handsworth. I've also emailed Witton and Yardley where I believe a couple more might be but I'm not sure where to look for my ggg grandparents who were living in Edgebaston.

He was a gardener and I know that in 1851 his address was 159 The Dales Lodge, Fraser Road, Edgbaston.

He died in the 1st quater of 1857 so I presume he would be buried around that area. His name was Ephriam Dent (wife Mary).

Thanks
Sarah

Re: If they lived in Edgebaston where would they be buried?

Your too early for Brandwood End or Lodge Hill, so have you tried Warstone Lane opened in 1848.

Re: If they lived in Edgebaston where would they be buried?

No I haven't tried anywhere yet as I really wasn't sure where to start.

Thanks Mike

The cemeteries burial indexes are on microfilm at Birmingham Central Library

Re: If they lived in Edgebaston where would they be buried?

Unfortunately I don't live in Birmingham any more. I would like to find out so that I can bring my dad up for a day of cemetery visiting, I might ask at Handsworth cemetery as they seem to have access to Warstone Lane records. Failing that I guess it will be a trip to the library before I bring dad up.

Thanks again

My Edgbaston families are mostly at Lodge Hill - it would depend on when they died though. Lodge Hill seems to be the one they went to from around Islington Row, etc.

I have just looked at your first post, and I would try Edgbaston Parish Church first - it was certainly not closed by that date. That will be on film at the library.

Francis Road is the last road on the left hand side as you approach Five Ways on the Hagley Road and is where the nurses home was for the Childrens' Hospital.

Re: If they lived in Edgebaston where would they be buried?

Lodge Hill didn't open until 1895 so it's to early for that one. I can check the indexes for Warstone Lane if that will help.

The closest church is St John & St Peter, Darnley Rd, Ladywood, see https://www.stjohnpeter.org.uk , which opened in 1854. The registers are in the library. Let me know if you need a lookup - I may be going to the library later in the week. The web site doesn't make it clear if there was a churchyard for burials, but the picture on the History page shows land around the church.

Ooh that looks promising, thanks loads Brian, I'll have a look at the other names you posted too see if they are related. Is that a private or public grave?
