Holly Lane Erdington

wcadby

Brummie babby
I’m after a little info on Holly Lane in Erdington. Basically, my great grandfather was Born in Adderley street in Deritend and lived there for the majority of his life. His wife also lived in the nearby area for the majority of her life.

He was born in 1891.
Still there in 1901.
In 1915 when they got married, although he was away at War (in terms of address) she was still living in the area.
In 1922 when my grandfather was born, his birth address was Phillips Street which is still in the area.
However, in 1924 my great grandfather died at the age of 32 from stomach cancer, and was shown as living at 609 Holly Lane. This seems an awfully long way to travel to move house at the time? Would there have been any obvious reason for this move that I’m missing? Specialist care in the area?

Bit of a long shot I know, but any ideas people have would be most welcome.

Additionally, how new is the housing in Holly Lane? would 609 Holly lane in 1924, be the same 609 holly lane now?

Hi wcadby :) Holly Lane, Erdington is not that far from Philips Street, Aston (Newtown) being about 2 minutes in a car (on a quiet Sunday  )Phillips St-Aston X-Spag Junction-Tyburn Rd-left at junction, old Dunlop is (right turn)
Lot of larger 6+ bedroom houses in Holly Lane probably 1920-30,s build so a good chance of "private care/rest home".
Good luck,, JohnY

609 Holly Lane is in the part between Tyburn Rd and Kingsbury Rd (LHS from Tyburn Rd) but these are not big houses. I lived at 294 fom 1965 to 1983. Dave.

Hello again wcadby,
If you have read my posts you must be very confused as to where 609 Holly Lane is? My apologies. At first I was sure it was at the top end, then I remembered website for House Prices and this site showed me it was at the other end of the lane. Please see attached pics of where 609 is. Once again my apologies and due to problems I had with posting on the Forum website, I am only now able to correct my input. Bottom line = 609 Holly Lane is still standing! Cheers, Dave.

Is this view of Holly Lane, Erdington taken near the junction with Sutton Road ? If so, is that Josiah Mason’s Norwood House in the distance (left of second large tree) ? Viv.
