Hodgekinson or boat family

Interested in Hodgekinson or Hodgkinson family who were boat people from 1836 to 1900. Specific names include Thomas.

I have no knowledge of this subject. I will spend time reading through all the old postings to learn more about the life.

Would anybody know of this name?

Whilst this is an old post. Mention should be made of H R Hodgkinson who gave a talk on local canals in 1913 and whose lantern slide collection is preserved at Birmingham Archives.

There was a William Hodgkinson, secretary of the Worcester and Birmingham Canal Navigation who had served 42 years at the company by 1870. His father took part in the construction of the canal, started in 1790.

HR Hodgkinson may be the well-known Birmingham solicitor connected with the firm Pinsent and Co. until he retired around 1937, and was a prominent member of the Birmingham Archaeological Society. He published, amongst other books, “Notes on the History of Midland Waterways” in 1913.

Yes,

H R Hodgkinson was the solicitor and he belonged to a family linked to waterways or early railways. There was Samuel Hodgkinson and John Hodgkinson in that ancestry line

The father of HR Hodgkinson was Walter Loveridge Hodgkinson (1841-1935). He was Chairman of Holt Brewery, and the Metropolitan and Carriage Wagon Co. He was also a Director of Tubes Ltd and Alldays and Onions Ltd.

Walter’s father was George Hodgkinson (Banker’s Clerk b 1816), and his mother Ann Loveridge (1818-1897).

HR Hodgkinson (1873- ) also had a sister Agnes and a brother Walter B.

Notes on the History of Midland Waterways, written by HR Hodgkinson on December 10th 1913, was part of the 39th Volume of "Transactions" issued by the Birmingham Archeological Society.

HRH gave a lecture on the above date on the History of Midland Waterways. It was at a meeting of the Birmingham Archeological Society at the Midland Institute.
