Blimey - I remember it looking exactly like that - maybe NOT the fashions though! Am I getting old..you bet! Off for my Ovaltine now and an early night. ??? Lovely photo though, I've taken a copy to remind me of the days my gran and uncle Joe lived in Icknield Street, almost opposite the horse trough and the days I worked in Warstone Lane. Hope that's OK Moma.

Be my guest Charlie, I am glad it brought back some memories.................I didn't know you were that old though:D :D :D

Hi Astonian,i dont know some of the family's you mentioned i am from Shakespeare Rd.Ladywood,i remember the cafe i used it sometimes, there was a kid who used that cafe at the time who wanted as we use to say have a knock at me his name was Larry Spears, but little did he know i was a school boy boxer from the age of ten i boxed for one of best boxing schools in brum St Marys Hockley needless to say he came unstuck.
Me and my two brothers also went on the inner circle 8 bus on a Sunday afternoon 3d all the way round about 1954/5

I remember going boxing training on the number 8 bus one Wednesday evening at the time Stephanie Baird had been murdered up Five Ways Y M C A i think and there were detectives on the buses
asking if anybody had seen this bloke,it was scary at the time, anyway they caught this bloke, and he got life, they should have hung him but thats my opinion, because later some of my mates who worked on the building Tamworth at the time, and this bloke. was on the same site.

You To have a nice day Mossy Knowles

Hi moss
If you was a friend of mickey, you are certanily a friend of mine .
also i do remember your dad and the shop
mickey lost two brothers, raymond, and hassen in the early part
of his life, raymond the oldest had a epelecic fit and fell in the cut
and drowned on the monument cut behind shakespear st
and hassan a couple of years later after a drinking session with
mickey at the tavern in winson green rd oppersite the winson green
prison he fell off a wall whilst balancing and died .
and sadly mickey as died .afew years ago now , he married a girl
named verea she was the omly girl whom kept him on the straight
and narrow, is oldest sister married a bloke from shakespear st
you will probaly recall him his name was tony cunningham
mickey,s sister was sheila ,
moss me and the mrs and friends every year come up to weston
we are ito the line dancing and the country and western
we have got a caravan on unity farm down in brean
and every year in brean thereis a big venue for the westerns
you may have seen people walking around western in the gear
any way the venue this year startson the sept 28 through till
the 8 oct , so we will be in western our selfs so we could come
around to your club or pub and have a tot with you mate
i under stand when you said there is people there you can talk to
and some you don,t i have seen them , some are very unsavable
people in that town
mossie when was the last time you was up in lady wood
you wouldn,t reconise the old place now , i think the only
thing that has,nt change and still there is the old spring hill
libary , they have built all around it and left it
do you recall paddy hardimam and his gang [ the owlcats]
known as the lady wood gang .
lady wood now is known as gun slingers alley , rife with guns
and drugs and shooting ,nearly every day ,you can walk down there
at any given time and you won,t see a soul but these things are
are happening daily .
well mossie i have got to take my old dutchess into the centr of
worcester for shopping as i live twenty miles in a village outside the
the worcestershire city, its a little village isolated and nothink goes
we have one village shop and a pub ,but i like in the middle

goodmorning moss
when did you last seen mickey
i read about mickey in the obituarys colum in the evening
mail and it was put there by vera is wife
this was about two years ago
i can only presume that there was only one
mid night mickey wayhab from the shaky rd
when the wayhabs left the shaky they moved up to
heath street winson green
i do know that to be a fact , because i lived with them
for a couple of years ,at heath st
when micky came out of the gaol he came to live with
the family up at the heath st by the lee bridge tavern
at dudley rd it was mickey whom stabbed the
gather at the hingegestion pub
when he was young
i used to go out with his sister sheila for some years
we wasto get married but things changed for the
better for me and we parted,
sheila and her family whom eventualy married tony
cunningham from shaky rd and all her younger brothers
and sister lives down by the pelam pub alum rock
as i have said i did read about it in the evening mail
about two years ago, and yes he would be about
61 now , it his the same mickey wayhab i have read
it would be a big cocicidence if there was two micky
wayhabs married to a lady called vera
unless it was his son , but saying that surely
the message would have included mickeys name
along with vera, sname on there loss in the mail
some people might have classed him as a hard man
but he was,t he was asoft guy with a heart of gold
and highly emotional person and a short fuse
he was a real nice guy
speak to you again mossie ,astonian ;;;;

hockly

hi everybody
i was wondering wether or not as anybody on the forum
ever went to icknield st school on the forum and any possibleabilty
that they may have a pic of the school and any pics of the old hockley brook in the 50,s era when you had a police man on point duty
wearing his big white cloves
most appreciated astonian ;;;

Thanks

Thanks for the photo. Can I ask when it was taken and what the source is? My Elsmore relatives had a butchers shop at 156 Icknield Street in the 1850s and at 222 in Icknield Street in 1861 and 1871.

David

Hello David and welcome to the forum. The photo is a postcard of which a copy was sent to me by a friend. We are unsure of the date but I would think its around 1900.
It's sad that there don't seem to be many photo's of the Icknield Street area.

Try the Brookfields site on the main Website, David. Quite a few photos there taken around Icknield Street area. (Click on Main Sites button , top right hand corner)

Sid Butts

Hi Mossy

Sid Butts was my grandfather. He had a drapers shop on Shakespeare Road in Ladywood and I understand was well known by all. Attached are a couple of pics; One is Sid outside the Commercial Inn. I think it looks as if they were all about to go off for a trip. He is in the centre with a small boy whom I believe is his son, also Sid. The other pic is of the shop itself taken about 1949 with my Gran on the step.

Steve what great pictures a lovely piece of social history thanks for posting.

Hi Mossy, Astonian, my son was born in in Hingestion St in 1966 we used to live at 2/139 Hingestion St right opp the Rose & Crown.
The Gaffer your on about got stabbed the day we moved in I'll never forget it! It was the Laurels Pub, it was on a corner, but I dont actually think it was Hingestion St but the 2 streets that came together, the one St went to Spring Hill and t'other went up to Clissold St it was like a 3 way Junction, and the guy who did it was called Midnight!
The week after we moved in they filmed Kathy Come Home in the next but one yard to me!

hi jude
You certainly have a good memory
the streets you are on about are was new spring st ,
going up to clissold st ,
the other one was george street west leading to spring hill
clissold took youto the old coal wharf ,where the coal was delivered by barges to the wharf
one of my fried lived next door o the little shop on hingegestion st
his name was terry silvester and the one whom lived in george st west
was terry hewitt,we all went to icknield st hockley brook
when the big island was there and a copper was on point duty
with his big white cloves on ,
hingestion st was a rough area ,but they certainly picked the right
area for kathy come home i certainly knew most of the familys
around the area andthe carrying on,s believe me ,
did youever take your son to the little park they called the wreck
which was along george st west ,?.
i look foreward to seeing your threads with intrest keep them coming
and i nope mossy can add is reflections and memories to thethread
about hingestion st as mossy was around them days as myself
have a nice day jude best wishes astonian ,;,
