Re: hare and hounds..kingstanding.

Are all these pubs your old stomping grounds Lyn. Hope I ain't stepped out of line by saying that. I must be careful what I say:rolleyes::)

Re: hare and hounds..kingstanding.

Two fantastic finds Lyn! In the first photo you can still see the fields behind the pub, before the 1930s development of the Kingstanding estate. The original pub is much smaller than I imagined. So there must be a third and fourth H&H, the third being the one with the Dutch gables, then wasn't it re-built again? Or have I got one too many pubs ......! :D Viv.

Re: hare and hounds..kingstanding.

Also just noticed in Lyn's first photo, you can se the photographer's shadow. Marvellous bit of history. Just love it. Viv.

Re: hare and hounds..kingstanding.

hi viv..yes i also noticed the photographers shadow...i think there has only been 2 hare and hounds but cant swear to that..somewhere on the forum there is another shot of the orginal pub with workmen standing outside...cant recall what thread its on though..

lyn.

Re: hare and hounds..kingstanding.

Lyn think maybe I've got it mixed up with another pub. :headhit: great photos and thanks for digging these out. Is the H& H still there? Viv.

Re: hare and hounds..kingstanding.

viv it is still there but closed yet again...the forecourt is being used as a car wash...

Re: hare and hounds..kingstanding.

That's a pity. I remember the photo you posted of a group of people in that very car park .... It was a group of mostly men, only a couple of ladies in the picture. Viv.

Re: hare and hounds..kingstanding.

Found them .... Here the two photos Lyn posted on another thread of the front of the H& H. Viv.

Re: hare and hounds..kingstanding.

Thank you for helping me answer a question...what is that pubs name. I am currently collecting oral histories from the Kingstanding estate and its landmarks. It is a shame that this pub is boarded up now but I'm hopeful that people will be able to recall it in my interviews. Can I ask you where you found the photos and who owns their copy right so I can ask permission to use them in my project. Many Thanks Chris Hillcox www.kingstanding.wordpress.com 07783903096

Re: hare and hounds..kingstanding.

A relative of Brens ran the pub many years ago. I will try and find out their names?.

Re: hare and hounds..kingstanding.

Many Thanks. Am I ok to use the digital image posted to see if people can make recollections? I'll post links if any of my interviewees recall the pub. Cheers Chris HIllcox

Re: hare and hounds..kingstanding.

hi chris...i would think that whoever took the pics i posted would no longer be with us and so you would not be able to contact them... so at a guess there would be no copywrite issues....

good luck with the venture...

Re: hare and hounds..kingstanding.

Hi. chrishillcox.
One of the cottages to the left of the Hare and Hounds was "Ryan's Post Office" (Kingstanding Rd.P.O.) Ryan as he was known used to run about in an old three wheel van, it had single wheel at front and was powered by motor bike engine. He owned the field opposite Harringay Road where he grew spuds.etc and he sold them from an old shed just to the left of the gate into field.

Re: hare and hounds..kingstanding.

Hi. Lyn & Vivienne.
Thanks for pic of Ryan's P.O.Should have mentioned I Was thinking back to the late 1940s re.Ryan's P.O. and Ryan's Field. The kids used to refer to Mr.Ryan as "Old Ryan" and we used to buy swedes from him to make lanterns.Pleased to hear the cottages are still standing.
Regards
Pembroke

Re: hare and hounds..kingstanding.

The parents of a friend of mine Elsie & Bill Edmundson ran the Hare & Hounds in the early 60s. Previously they ran the Church Tavern? in Church Lane, Aston.

Re: hare and hounds..kingstanding.

Does anyone remember a waste piece of land opposite the H & H, next to the chip shop. We used to play in there. You had to climb over some concrete fences to get into it. I think we used to get onto the piece of land via an alleyway off Tresham Road. Never worked out if it was bomb damage or left over from the 1930s building scheme. The ground wasn't flat and was full of holes. The shopkeepers along that row of shops next to it used to use it as a bit of a dumping ground. We used to collect tiny bottles from there. Hate to think what had once been in those bottles. Viv.

Amazing images.

Many Thanks for sharing, it was my home for many years:)

My parents ran the pub for around 10 years. We left when I was 16.

I think we moved in around 1971 and left in 81. John & Joan Buck were the licence holders.

I can remember at lot of the old staff too, especially Dolly & Elsie who used to run the lounge and the Bingo nights.
Jerry the Irish barman for many years and old bill bailey.

There are so many more to list.

John my Father died around 8 years ago aged 83, my Mother Joan is still here sitting by me now.

Fond memories :0)

Lyn I came across this great photo which you originally posted of the farm hands outside the Hare and Hounds pub in 1919. Hope it's Ok if I re-post it for you as I know you probably have enough on your plate posting all your other photos!! It's a great photo of its time as all the farms around the area must have been virtually wiped out with the massive development of Kingstanding in the 1930s. Viv.

Re: hare and hounds..kingstanding.

I only went in th H & H once around the late 1960s. My memory of it was of a pretty dark pub inside with lots of dark oak and leaded windows, although it had big windows, it wasn't very bright inside I think. It also had tapestry-type upholstery on the chairs and stools etc. Done up a bit like a coaching inn. But like I say I only ever went in there once. Viv.

Re: hare and hounds..kingstanding.

Yes I do Jean, his name is Paul and he's off living in sunny Spain. Please tell me more:redface:

Re: hare and hounds..kingstanding.

A previous poster said it was run by Bill and Elsie Edmundson...It was Edmunds , Elsie was my Aunty (Dads ssister). Went ther in the 60's to many family partys.

Thanks for the correction Len, my friend Pat and her sister Valerie must be your cousins. Sadly lost touch with Pat over the years.
