Guest Francis (aka Spenser)

Hello from Vienna!
I'm a British freelance journalist (from Sunderland) trying to find out if a certain individual worked as a reporter / journalist on (or contributed to) any Birmingham-area newspaper during the 1940s-70s. He was a local man (born Smethwick, died Birmingham) who had some success as an author in the 1930s and 1940s but I can find few records of him after 1949 (when his last book was published) until his death in 1983. His main subjects in terms of his books were crime and the underworld. His birth name was Francis Harold Guest but he wrote books as James Spenser. So, his byline might have been one of the following
James Spenser
Jimmie Spenser
Jim Spenser
Francis Guest
Frank Guest
Harold Guest
Harry Guest
F H Guest
J Spenser

do any of these ring any bells with any of you?
is there a local expert on Birmingham-region journalism of this period I could perhaps consult?

thanks in advance!
Neil
