Granch - Jackson, Aston 1907

Hello

Stumbled across the site in a google search to find out whether Deritend was in Aston - found out it is!

Am trying to find out more about my Grancher. As much as I know is:

was born sidney jackson 1907, became sidney beech when his widowed mum remarried in 1915
he spent most of his working life repairing midland red buses
was known as Darkie as his hair was so dark
was deaf from motorbike accident in his teens (so not called up)
moved to hereford (for midland red) sometime before 1938 (when he married my nan)
one of about 11 children - mainly(all?) boys
used to race greyhounds illegally in brm
was really, really short

His dad was james jackson, born aston 1869 & his mum was elizabeth broughton.

Signed up for a free trial with The Geneologist. My 10 free credits lasted about 5 minutes, but the 1891 census did turn up both parents names in Deritend, Brm, but not living together (think they were married 1892).

Jackson James 22 Wife Birmingham, - No 52 Angelina Street, Deritend
(not sure how james can be a wife??)

Broughton Elizabeth 20 Visitor Glass Finisher 159new Town Road, St George
Broughton Elizabeth 20 Daughter Scratch Brusher Birmingham, - No 11 Shepley Fernal Highgate Street, Deritend

Would appreciate any info on these areas - my knowledge of Birmingham is limited to the shopping centres - or if anyone remembers a large Jackson family in Aston, would love to hear.

Would also be grateful for any tips on where to go next - after using 10 credits on a few searches in about 5 minutes, am reluctant to spend a lot on the 'paid for' sites.

Thanks.

Nicky

Hello Nicky. This is the marriage of James to Elizabeth Broughton

September quarter 1892 Aston Ref 6d 421

If you order the certificate you will know which of the two Elizabeths on the census is yours, the name of her father will tell you.

A good freesite for BMD's is FreeBMD, just type that into your browser, they haven't covered all of the registers yet, but the 19th century is more or less complete I think. If you want value for money Ancestry is as good as they come. I paid £65 for the year, with unlimited access to all of the census, BMD's, Army records and more. Worth having a look on their site

We are off topic in this section, so if this post is moved you will get a message as to where it is.

Sorry Chris

Bull Ring & shops for the Gal

Hello & Welcome Nicky from Hereford linked Family & B,ham origins :)

Ok, now you know the shops  in B,ham , righty Oh,
The St Martins Church at top of the hill starts the "Shops"
(ooh painful memories of Xmas shoppin, My Wallet burner  )

Mmh, a short walk down that hill 2 minutes & your in Deritend which
is more B,ham central than Aston being 1+ mile away.
Midland Red/West Midlands Travel have history of Garages in
the Deritend area, the latter still has & its under redevelopment now.
So your Sydney Jackson worked almost on his doorstep, makes sense.
You references to "Highgate" Street/Area well that is just a little to the
right after your walk down Digbeth to Deritend, turn right & walk 2 minutes
so they lived & worked very close to City Centre ( & Shops, grrh! )
Now the other side of City Centre by the Central Firestation & start of
the Aston Expressway is Newtown Row (St George Parish area) this road is quite long & reaches through 6 ways Aston out to Birchfield & Perry Barr
but top end is only 4-5 minute walk from St Martins Church,
Hope this helps give you a Zone-area for focus researching,
Good luck & best regards,, John Y
ps Avoid pay-per-views as much as you can, try FreeBMD thats good
& if you want a hand look-up just ask on here,,
Lots on here help our Brummie & Midlands related friends,, ;)

Welcome Nicky and happy hunting. Good luck in your quest you have eventually got to the right website, the folk on here will help you in any way :)

Welcome Nicky.
Grancher ! I haven't heard that expression for many years, you must be Welsh somewhere along the line.:)

Thanks!!!!

Thanks all.

Alberta, thanks for your info. Bit dissapointed the Brummie line stops with my great-great grandad - thought I was from a long line. A scouser instead!. I had no idea. Maybe the Broughton line goes way back.......

Will get the certificate & see what turns up.

Postied, had no idea Granch was a welsh term. Hereford is just over the border & most people think it is in Wales, so I guess not surprising we borrow their expressions - just found out my nan, who i thought was welsh through and through was from a long line in Ross. Another dissapointment.

You folks have been great. Thanks for all your help.

Hoping against hope but is this thread still alive?

Nicky, Sidney had a brother "Leonard Jackson" also changed to Beech in 1915 (he also had another brother and 3 sisters). I am Leonard's direct descendant, he is my great grandfather, caught me by surprise when I found out that my last name could have been Jackson and not Beech. I would very much like to get in contact with you to discuss! I am trying to research the Jackson side of the family and i'm coming up pretty empty, the family seems to be very elusive. I hope you somehow get this message.

Hello! Yours is a very old post now - but - I am new to this and am directly descended from Edwin Broughton, 6, of 11 Highgate St. I just did a search on "Broughton" and found Alberta's list with Edwin on it! Are you a Broughton?! Carolann
