  • HI folks the server that hosts the site completely died including the Hdd's and backups.
Luckily i create an offsite backup once a week! this has now been restored so we have lost a few days posts.
im still fixing things at the moment so bear with me and im still working on all images 90% are fine the others im working on now
we are now using a backup solution
Has there been any update from the Council on this building?

I would have thought now would be an ideal time to move it back to Digbeth with all the regeneration that's going on in that area.

if only the council thought the same as you and most of us on here judi...sadly i have no good news...i fear it will just be left to fall down now...

lyn

No, none.

I think there was workmen next to The MAC where the outdoor arena was though. And a council lawnmower.

first mini golf..then swan pedalos and now a roller coaster which will be unveiled at the lord mayors show on sunday...this is the latest in a £1 million investment for the park..i wonder if the lord mayor will pass the golden lion and ask the question...what is happening to our heritage ??..i very much doubt it because lets face it..no one much cares

I know this is an old thread, but this needs correcting;

the Mini Golf, Swans, Funfair area aren't funded by the council, they're private money paying rent for the sites.

thanks for that info rich alas the fact still remains that the historic golden lion pub still lies unloved and unwanted...so sad that before it got into such a state no one had the forward thinking to save it..too late now i think

I doubt much has happened about the Golden Lion since we last looked at this - except further deterioration. Having read the article below I’m surprised it was never really regarded as a sufficiently important building to warrant proper preservation. As an ancient Hall/house if the Gild if St John it’s a crying shame it’s sat rotting in Cannon Hill Park all these years.

Just read an article in Mosely B13 magazine (not scanning it as unsure of copyright).

"Historic Pub in Cannon Hill Park to get a New Lease of Life.

A £32,008 grant by Historic England will go towards a £40,008 project development scheme with the aim of bringing Cannon Hill Park's Grade 2 listed Golden Lion pub back into use. "
The money is funding to carry out development works to establish the extent of decay and cost of repairs. Once this has been done work will be begun to establish plans for the future of the site. Birmingham Conservation Trust are involved.

Not sure how, if at all, the fnancial situation at the council will affect this plan.

yes its a start but this is only to look at the state of the building and could just be a token effort after all the press regarding the loss of the crooked house  ... but after spending years visiting and photographing many empty and neglected buildings i know that just 5 years takes its toll but after over 20 years of neglect its going to be a big and costly project if it can be saved... i am not trying to be negative here just realistic in todays economic climate and lets face it we have heard all these promises before regarding other heritage buildings..also i think its owned by bcc in which case as the city is now bankrupt how will they pay for restoration...we can only wait and see but personally i think this is a case of too little too late...fingers crossed and everything else for this one as over the years i have seen it go from bad to worse

True Lyn but I can't imagine Historic England would pledge money if they didn't think there was some hope for the future.
So fingers crossed.
jan no one more than i would be happy if this wonderful building was saved...a few years back i contacted the council a few times but received not one reply so as you say fingers crossed

It's interesting that Mike's Historic England link in post #197, emphasises possible HE support for the purpose of protecting the historic fabric and/or where there is a structural need. And any application must be for work that needs to be done to reduce the risk that the property faces or to enable the risk to be reduced.

This gives me hope ! This building qualifies on several counts, if HE can be persuaded (that is, after the current HE supported survey and a plan of works prepared). Even if further support is given to simply reduce the risk, it's a step in the right direction.

I think the fact that the City coffers are empty, helps the Golden Lion's case. There's absolutely no way the Council will throw money at it now, after all these years. So it's down to others to pick up the project if they really want to preserve a significant historic building. The pressure's on.

thanks viv slightly different to the one i posted but it does show the inside of the pub...having now seen these videos i just cant understand why for over 20 years or so its been left to rot...this now looks doable to me but they need to get their fingers out and quick

lyn

And more.

Anyone heard if there's any progress on this ?
I can't answer your question but....I live in the same ward as Cannon Hill Park and the newsletter of one of our councillors has this:

Get involved with looking after Cannon Hill Park

The fledgling new and revitalised Friends of Cannon Hill Park group will hold their second meeting on Wednesday 28th February 6.30pm at The MAC. With the recent announcement of Historic England funding towards restoration of The Golden Lion inside the park but also the looming cuts to council services and staff, community involvement is all the more important to make sure we shape and maintain our open spaces and parks for the future.
