I worked for Watsons in Broad Street, their building had I think three floors and a cellar, one of the upper floors they rented out for a time as offices to a company called iirc Modern Domestic Appliances, they turned out to be a dodgy 'switch sales' company who circulated districts with postcards offering sewing machines for £7/10s then when the reps got in they persuaded the customers to buy £60 machines on the never never.
Watson's showroom had double doors at the front and we used to drive cars up the footpath to get them in the front.
While I was there they also had a floor to ceiling front window installed, half inch thick plate glass.
The bosses bought a full sized snooker table and we (the mechanics) carried it up in sections, slate beds, to the third floor.
Another fairly regular job was to shovel tons of coke out of the cellar and wheelbarrow it to the boiler room at the back entrance in Tennant Street.
