Embarrassing Problem.

This is a real problem for me. When I have the site open and left click on a link to open it, I keep getting a pop up, usually porn, but there are other things as well. It takes two clicks and then everything works normally, until next time I open the page. Any ideas?

Sounds as if you have a rogue browser taken over. Run anti malware and spybot search and destroy.

Downloaded an advanced spyware but problem is still there. It found 3 infections (trojans) and removed them, but still getting these annoying pop-up's. Don't know what to do now.

Barrie,

If you are getting porn type pop ups then there is still some issue for you to have removed.

Advert type pop ups and other inoffensive, but often annoying, ones can be blocked easily on both Firefox and Chrome browsers.

You need to go to the 'Add ons' in the TOOLS menu in Firefox. Look though all the add-ons and choose Adblock Plus. That makes quite a difference. It is similar method in Chrome.

For anyone wishing to avoid trackers etc. have a look at Ghostery.

Yes. Have tried MSN. Google and Firefox. It happens on all of them.

So it seems that there could be something in your computer which hijacks any browser you use. Which operating system are you using, XP or W7 or W8 ?

Hi Barrie, a similar problem happened to me, only i was getting gambling ads. If you have Firefox, click on help, (top left) click on troubleshooting info, & then click on Reset firefox (near top right ) Firefox will reset itself & hopefully the annoying ads will have gone. ( mine did ). If you visit sites like TPB you must use a good virus protection & also a good adware programme like Malwarebytes. The free version is ok but better to use the Pro version. HTH.

It may not remove the infection, which is what you really want to do, but if you install AdBlock it might prevent them popping up but like I say you really want to get to the real cause of the problem, I usually run MalwareBytes when I get any problems that usually cures it, the other option might be to do a system restore back to a time when you weren't getting the pop-ups

I think that you might need to change the security settings. These can be found via "control panel" - the only reason I say that is that previously I used a programme which needed po us and I had to alter that setting from high to medium.

When i was getting gambling ad pop ups, i did a full scan with Norton & Malwarebytes Pro which both came back clear, which is why i chose to reset Firefox & that did the job. I don`t think system restore would get rid of a virus.

Presumably you have a Windows operating system . (XP, Vista, 7 or 8, 8.1).

This might help. I doesn't require any new programmes or software.

Go to Control Panel and find (often in Administrative Tools) the Disk Clean up. Run that, it may remove cookies or an unwanted element on your pc. Just make sure you check the boxes before agreeing to clean your disk up.

Another thing to remember is to ensure is that your settings for the browser include checking the boxes which says:
remove history and cookies.

This helps remove many unwanted things you collect whilst surfing the web when shutting down your pc.

Things have gone from bad to worse. Downloaded malwarebytes and it found and removed 42 threats, but now I cannot use the internet, keep getting a box that says it is unable to connect to the proxy server. Typing this on my mini ipad. HELP!!

edited to add. panic over, just changed the LAN Setting and it worked. phew.

Hi Barrie - Glad to hear that you have overcome your latest problem, and you now have to see if malwarebytes has removed the pop ups. I've used malwarebytes and MSSE for years and so far have managed to avoid problems - I'm now touching wood !

I am not sure what version of windows you have but do you know how to find the control panel? If you get there you can find the internet connection - you might be able to reset your connection and can certainly block pop ups. Failing that you might need to ring your service provider.

Phew, good news in the end then, lets hope they have gone for good, need to figure out next how they got there!

Further to this little problem, my grandaughter discovered that it was my browser that was infected (Google) She uninstalled it and reinstalled and problem is no more,
