Links: Early Architectural Renderings from archiseek site

Ann Steiner

master brummie
I don't know if this information has been posted before or not, so sorry if it's a repeat. In looking for possible photos of an old building in Birmingham today I bumped into the following website that was quite interesting.

https://archiseek.com

When you bring up the home page, if you place your cursor first on "buildings and places" it will drop down a menu of countries. Place your cursor again on England, and you get another drop-down. Select "West Midlands", at the bottom, and it brings up about 8 pages of architectural renderings of many fine old buildings from around the Birmingham area. Most are from the 1800's through the very early 1900's.

Not sure if this is where I should post this, but I hope I picked the right spot.

Sounds very interesting Ann, but when I tried (using two separate browsers just in case) ,I got message "this page is not available"

Same here Mike. I did manage to get it loaded earlier, but now it's being stubborn. So the link will work, but only when it wants to. Ann it's got some interesting B'ham & W.Mids buildings on there. Wonder if there's a problem with the site? viv.

Sorry Mike -- and sort of weird. I went back on Google and looked it up again (I use Mozilla Firefox for a browser). It brought up a link that actually has a different web URL this time -- www.archiseek.com Although I found it the first time with the one I posted above. ???
But anyway, it wouldn't come up for me -- went into search mode and I finally got tired of waiting and left. Maybe there's an issue with their site right now. It seems to be based in Ireland from the Google link. Maybe you can try it again later? The way I originally found it was doing a Google search for photos of Jevons and Mellor in Birmingham England. That was one of the links that came up.

In post #9, I think without a doubt your photo No 1 is Berlin House and I think there is a good possibility that your photo 2 is the building next door. Both were demolished c1920 to make way for the new Lewis's Department Store.

Phil,

I am no expert on the area, I just ended up engrossed in the website (good way to spend a lunch time!). I actually then carried on and went through the London and South East sections which means I haven't achieved much since lunch time (never mind!)

I'm sure you are correct about the building, who were 'Jevons and Mellor?'

Bob

Bob

Jevons and Mellor I believe were drapers who had the ground floor shop premises in Berlin House. I believe the rest of the building had varied uses such as workshops offices and I even think there were some apartments. If you put Jevons and Mellor & Berlin House into the search box you should come up with some posts o the building as they have both been discussed previously.

Phil

I have an old advertising map of Brum that includes an ad for a company in Berlin House.

Batch 4

3) 1886 The Princess Alice Orphanage Oscott

The Theatre drawing must have been one that was declined in favour of the New Theatre (later re-named the Grand, then the Grand Casino Ballroom) which was built next to Old Central Hall (later Kings Hall). The Theatre was demolished in 1960 when Priory Queensway was built. Viv.

I have replaced the lost images at the beginning of the thread from the original website, with the exception of one which I could not find.
I have slightly altered the description of several of the items ( for example with two of the original drawings the titles did not make clear that these plans for the assize court were rejected) In addition some of the images might not be in exactly the same order as implied by the post

While looking for the images I found there were others from the area which either were not found in the earlier search , or, more likely, have been added more recently. Will post these here.
First Four:
1 . Mutual Sick Benefit & Old Age Society, Birmingham 1898. Also known as Coleridge chambers, in Corporation st near law courts, it is Grade II listed. This drawing appeared before completion.
2. Birmingham and Midland Eye Hospital, started 1881, completed 1884. Now a hotel.
3. Carrs lane building over GWR tunnel. demolished 1988 after structural failure. Not quite sure which building this is.
4. Working boys Home Deritend 1886. Designed for the Rev. A. Clifton Mogg
