Dancing to Romantic Bands/Orchestras

Bernard on this thread you will find Edmundo Ross details plenty more bands on here:)
If you use the search box above you could find more

According to the Edmundo Ros website he was born in Trinidad in December 1910, so even older than you thought Bernard! :)

I must admit that my youngest son (now 41) never ceases to amaze me with some of his requests for CDs at Christmas & birthday times - Keely Smith & Louis Prima, and people of that ilk that I can barely remember myself! :p

Remember also Rosemary Squires? She's pretty secretive about her age, but boasts about having been in the business for 60 years. She's alive, well, living in Wimborne, and still doing concerts all over the place! :D

Maurice

Maurice, Malcolm Laycock on BB2 Radio Sunday evenings played one of her songs a couple of weeks ago and gave dates and where she was appearing and she's still busy as you say.

Must have been at least 5 years ago when I last saw her in Wimborne, Alf, but she looked in good fettle! :D

Neil Sedaka must be knocking it on a bit too and he's still touring the world! I wish I could get some of the tablets they must be on!! :D

Maurice

My first recollection of the Locarno Ballroom was in 1957, when as a day student at Mathew Boulton Tech. our lunch times were spent at the Locarno ogling the birds, and if you were brave asking one for a dance. My first experience of the "Jive" a dance that I can still do with some merit today.
We went to all the big band concerts, Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Ted Heath, Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gallespie at Studio 1 in Aston. We were big band fans, Trad jazz was on the other side.

OUCH I never went to the Locarno for my dancing, or anywhere in Birmingham but can you count the outskirts for this forum !!
The Gala Baths West Bromwich was my place.

We never journied as far as West Bromwich Anne, as that was the other side of the world in those days, but great to know you followed the same trends. Happy days.

evening all,ree the lacarno, correct me if i am wrong, but i thought the lacarno only opened in 1960. I thought mr Archer who was the old manager of the casino took over the locarno. My apoligies to anyone if i am wrong.

by for now

It must have been around 1957/8 when I frequented the Lacarno, as that was the time I was at Mathew Boulton College. We went there in our lunch break.
