Cope Street Ladywood

master brummie
Hi, I have just found out my Grandparents lived in Cope street Rotton park Ladywood, in the 1930s. Does anyone have any photos or info about the area then. The house was number 10. Regards Jackie

cope st

Sorry cant help you Williams on your grandparents address

The pub where the chara is out side is The Station the corner of Cope St and Moument Rd in the backround i what looks like a shop, but later on became a house, because my best mate Jimmy Hurley and family lived there, the big window was the front room and his mom had a piano you could see her playing it as you walked down Cope St,this was in the early 50s also the people who ran The Station were named Hately.

ladywood

Thankyou Billc, It was interesting to see the street where my Grandparents used to live, I'm not sure how long they lived there, but it must have been an improvement to some of the back to backs they had lived in, 1901 and before. Regards Jackie

Shakespeare Road

Astonian you mentioned some streets around Ladywood,im sure it was a slip of the tongue you said Shakespeare St when it should be Road,
I was born in 3/35 Shakespeare Road opposite the Commercial pub, left there in 1964 aged 15 to live in Nechells over the road from The Hamlet

Happy Days
Moss:)

cope st

hi mossy
just read your thread , i do beg your pardon
i think i will stand corrected , and it was shakespear rd ,
am i forgiven i hope
being a native of b,ham and a true brummie [astonian ]
we always spoke with a slang and called our roads
as streets yeah ,whether what ever it may be road -st ,
do you recall any of the familys down there
like the paddy hardimams , micky mid night alias
micky wahab the cunninghams and the lady wood mob
i knew alot of familys down there ,but these maybe the younger
generations from you , i,m saying that because i don,t know
how old you are mossie
the older ones are the bakers ,perks , whom was related to
my mother and the people at the chippie as well
us ladywood kids always refered to our roads as streets
we would always say we are going down such street ,
best wishes astonian ,

Thanks astonian. I will check out those names. I have a large blank spot in my research between the years 1901 and about 1960, due to my grandparents having passed away, and my family emigrating to America in 1968.
It is frustrating when one meets unexpected difficulty trying to find what should be basic facts about relatives who were alive during my childhood.

Still, that is why I love this site, and the good people like you that share their knowledge and memories:)

cope street

hi kev
glad i can shed some light on your passed
two more things that may be of help to you
the gregorys moved to a smart house up castle bromwich way
i think they call it that , it along the road from a pub called
the half penny, its a road that diverts to chelmsly wood
its been many years since i seen them up there
and also there was another family from shakespear rd
the bakers , there mother got shell shock during the raids
in the war ,and she became deaf and dumb
she started to knock the doors to try and sell you second clothes
her grand son started a little business in the old rag ally [b,ham ]
selling the clothes and detergents to the public
i presumethe sibbling are still alive, but where they are now
i cannot tell you , but the gregs are in the castle brom area
of brum

Hello Astonian,

I also remember the good old days in Ladywood in the 50s and 60s. I was born and brought up in Cope Street in that era.
It was great growing up there. You had no bathroom or inside loo, in fact you had to go down an entry to a block of 6 toilets, that you shared with other neighbours. I used to think everybody lived like this, but how wrong I was. People had nothing in those days but growing up there was a joy. The parents used to come out and play rounders etc with the kids on the light nights. Bonfire night was a neighbourly affair with us lads collecting wood for several days so that we could have a bonfire in the big yard. The moms and dads used to sort out some food with baked potatoes and hot chestnuts on the menu.

In my house at Xmas, the tree and trimmings weren't put up till I had gone to bed on Xmas Eve, then in the morning when I got up it was fantastic. Not like today when come the end of November you see the fronts of houses all decked out with blow up Santa's and Xmas lights.

I went to Steward St school and the headmaster at the time was a Mr Cowling and the names of some of the teachers were Ms Jones, Mr Sheppard, Mr Share, Mr Ward and a Miss Kirk.

I knew Tony Memory { It was a shame what happened to him ) I also knew the Bushell family, the Gardiners, the Moulsdales, the Teagues, not forgetting the Wali's ( Jeffrey, David and Sorena }.

Astonian, I'm afraid I must correct you on one item that you mentioned in your memories of Cope Street and that was, you recalling the TV people coming round Steward St school to select a couple of lads to play parts in the play about the area. Well I must point out that the little fat kid from the newsagents shop in Cope Street was never chosen nor played any part in the play because that little fat kid who you described so succinctly was me, Charlie Sharp

hi mean machine if you look under astonians avatar it will say "gone but not forgotten" this is the forums way when possible of letting members know that a member has sadly passed away...in astonians case this was about 3 years ago
