Computer Help Please.

First thing and don't kick me is to think back to what has happened since you last were able to send. What is the error code you get? Can you go back to a previous point when it did work OK?

Silly thought Ernie, when you are composing e-mail, is your computer automatically sending them to draft status - mine does sometimes and then I cant send it, until I re-open it in the draft folder, hit continue compose and then it will send - worth a look.

Might be worth resetting your modem/hub, had a similar problem accessing various websites including BT and resetting cured the problem.

Hi GER22VAN - need a bit more info!

1.What are you using for emails - web based, Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird etc?
2. Are you getting any error messages?
3. Do the emails stay in your outbox or disappear?
4. Can you access the Internet OK (presumably yes or you couldn't have posted your question!!)

I think that I had the trouble some time back and changed to Virgin from BT, could not access the internet but that part is now fixed. I use Outlook Express,Emails stay in my my out box. I shall have to recheck that error message I get.
Many Thanks to everyone.

I get PopOrange but I thought I should now be with Virgin.
D'ont quite understand it. Should be paying for Orange untill next month.

You need to check all the account settings, particularly the port numbers which are not the same in all email clients and the server names. You should be able to google 'email settings for Virgin' (for example) to get the info if you don't have it already.

I have always been with BT since having a PC 8 years ago and never had any major problems, think they are the best server for people like me who are not to PC wise. Simple and straight forward, on the odd occassion I have had a problem i find their tech help/advice easy to follow and problem always solved. Also find their email section simple and reliable. Eric

Does anyone use a VPN on win 7? I`ve been looking into using a VPN on my laptop, But it looks a bit complicated for a non techie like me. Is it simple & if i mess up will i be able to put things back to the way they were? Also, is it extra security from hackers/malware?

My son uses a VPN for his business when he is travelling around and may need to use a 'public wifi hot spot'. I'd stay like the rest of us Smudger ! ...:D

you can use cyberghost on win 7 its a free download and you can use it for upto 3 hours before being cut off and then just log on again kind reguards sidwho

Sidwho,
I`ve tried the free version of cyberghost & I`m not that impressed. I had to wait for a free slot to become available, & apart from anonymity it doesn`t offer much in the way of security unless you upgrade to the premium version. If I knew that the premium version was any good, then I might consider it, but the free version is not for me.

Apparently the latest Opera browser includes a VPN. I haven't tried it though. I have never used a VPN though, I might try it one day.

It doesn`t include anonymity for p2p file sharing. Big brother is out there watching us :-}

I was downloading when i noticed i`d been disconnected from the net, but my download was still continuing. How is this possible? I was using a vpn & bit comet. I just don`t understand how you can do a p2p download when not on the net?

You can't. Most likely it's either bitcomet taking its time to realise that the connection has gone and the transfer rates are averaged over time, the same emptying its cache, or whatever was telling you that the connection was gone wasn't entirely accurate.

Thanks wam. Does anyone know of a safe youtube mp3 converter? It seems everyone i`ve tried has been flagged as dangerous by Norton or Malwarebytes. There`s some good music on youtube that i`d like to download safely. If someone could steer me to a safe converter it would be much appreciated.

Hi Smudger,
Conversion programs Youtube to mp4 or mp3 often do come with a lot of unwanted baggage. The way I do it is to use an app named 'Audacity' which is a aimed at general sound editing. Using a setting in audacity 'Windows WASAPI' it will record any music (without microphones etc) which is actually playing in your computer ... the snag is you have play the song and it records in real time ... you cannot feed a load of Youtube URLs into it ... so it is not a bulk recorder.
The screenshot below shows it actually recording stereo on my Win 10 computer with Norton, Malwarebytes, and Windows Defender monitoring. I just play the recordings in my own computer using VLC and don't do anything else with them.

As above, I've not tried downloading audio from Youtube and I have tried audacity as a recorder. Audacity can be a pain to setup and I've had some computers that require a little wiring (an audio cable from the speaker socket to the microphone socket) to make the recording work.
there do seem to be a lot of downloads that say they can do the job so it's quite possible there is one out there. My usual option is download.com for such things. Here are a couple of their recommended programs
https://download.cnet.com/Free-YouTube-Downloader/3000-2071_4-75827483.html
https://download.cnet.com/ytd-video-downloader/
try a search for youtube downloader for more suggestions. Download.com do claim to screen for malware but some of the non-malicious items can be a pain.
They also have Audacity at https://download.cnet.com/Audacity/3000-2170_4-10058117.html

Copy the URL you want to save. In another tab open keepvid.com and paste the saved URL into the box where it says
Free Download Videos by Pasting Video URL. Click Download and you will get the choice of formats and qualities. Works for most YouTube sites although some are protected from copying.

I use Audacity completely without wires and find it very easy to set up but we all use our devices differently with different versions of Windows, different browsers, different sound cards, so it is difficult to come up with a method that suits everyone. Audacity merely copies what is playing in the computer and is good for copying audio from the iPlayer.
I'm running Win 10 Creators (1703 build 15063.250) at the moment and just tried the Microsoft built in screen recorder to record a Youtube video and got a perfect mp4 file ... just have to figure out how to get full screen ... :)
ps. now figured out the full screen recording and got nice video of Avro Vulcan taking off.

Smudger and all, a tip I'd like to pass on here is that if you ever download a programme like a converter or player, try to pick one from an established site. Softonic is one, but there are others. Then if you get the option, choose the CUSTOM download. This will allow you to refuse things like another browser or some messaging software. You do this by ticking the appropriate yes/no boxes when they appear before downloading starts, but they need to be watched for.

Regards, Ray T.

I have used for a long time now Freemake Video Recorder, but, and a big but, these days it comes with a lot of junk that you have to get rid of first. Follow Ray T's tip and select custom download and deselect anything that is ticked. Actually, its best to get into the habit of selecting Custom download with anything.
On a slightly different path, one program I used for years to equalise the volume for all my MP3 downloads was MP3 Gain. It was a small and easy program to use, but it does'nt work in W10, so I am looking for another program that is up to the same job. I have tried Audacity but I did'nt like it. If anyone can recommend one I would be grateful.

Freemake was flagged as dangerous by Norton & Softonic was flagged as potentially dangerous by Malwarebytes. I have managed to find one that seems safe, `Online video converter`. It`s basic but i`m sticking with it for now. Thanks everybody for you help.

Further to Ray T and terryb18, a site I frequent is Ninite.com. You can download and install multiple programs and it will select the appropriate (X86, X64) version as well as removing all the bloat that some program makers insist on including (often hidden). There's often useful programs on the Sourceforge.net
