This 1930s (?) image caught my attention. It's carrying coal but for Birmingham City Gas Department. Only 16mph. No surprise with a truck stacked to that capacity. Viv.image.jpeg
 
Very large sacks there Vivienne. It is possible that they were full of coke which was a by product of gas production. Once you had a reasonable bed of coal in the grate the application of coke gave a very great heat out - certainly warmed the cockles of everyone's heart.
 
You weren’t a ‘proper’ workman unless you had a coke brazier on the go. The black iron kettle would boil in about 10 seconds on the coke fire.
