Canal burst 1901

This is a report of something that has appeared on other threads, I believe, and other forums. It shows the result of work being done at George Jones Foundry, Lionel Street which lead to a canal breach. This bit of the canal had been sanctioned by a Private Act so that Charles Colmore could extend the canal from the 1769 terminus onto his land. Called the Newhall Branch, this canal came to terminate by wharves in Lionel Street, New Hall Street and Great Charles Street.

It was eventually de watered from Friday Street bridge, but the canal remained in water up to Friday Street as this 1932 ariel view shows.
