HI Maggs
I Was Going To Mention That One But I Thought Better Of It And The Reason Being That I Used To Work In The Back Preparing The Spuds Taking Out The Eyes
And Cutting Up And Battering The Fish And Also It Was My Auntie ELLEN,S Shop
Another Member Of The Jelf,s Brigade Because They Had A Couple Around Aston

I Remember One Friday A Man Came Into The Shop On The Friday Lunch Time
He Was A Gather From Bulpitts And Asked For A Peice Of Fish In Fact It Was Plaice
He Came Back At Five Oclock When We Openened And He Said To Aunty Ellen
That Peice Of Fish Was Disgusting And I Would Like A Refund She Told Him To Clear Off And Never To Return To The Shop Again ,
and Yes I certainly Remember That Shop And There Was A Bike Shop Next Door As Well Where I Bought My Spares From He Later Moved Across The Road next To Windbushes The Cake Shop Maggs Do You Remember THE Wrensons Oppersite The Toilets By Hingestion Street best wishes astonian ;;

Hello,

I have just found this thread, so sorry for not getting back sooner. I can't remember Wrensons, but I do remember Wimbushes, they made the best Apple Charlottes in the world. Do you remember Baines bakers, or Rees and Felix or even Hickmans the greengrocer?

Yes it has just come back to me, I do remember that grocery shop, but didn't know it was Wrensons. There was a big toy shop there too and Sketchley. Can't remember the name of the the toy shop at the moment, but on the way home from school I used to look in there and dream every day.

WILMOT And Breedon ,Which Occupied The Top End Of Camden Street
My Grandfather died while working as a Metal Caster at 1 Camdon St. Would this be the firm he worked for do you think?
Or am I at the worng end of Camdon St for it to have been Wilmot And Breedon ?

Thanx Chris/Pom :amgel:

I was interested in what you said about that doctor. I was eighteen and my friend was 16. All I can say is what he did to us, he would be struck off for these days. Of course those were the day's when we said nothing for fear of not being believed or just plain embarassment. I didn't find out until recently that my friend has suffered the same thing as I did. Have to say that although I was registered with that practice, I never went back to him, again, nor did my friend. Maggs.

Regarding the Ingleby pub. Some friends of mine ran it for a while in the 1950's. They were Mr & Mrs Walters, and their son John.

Does anyone remember them?

hi maggs
i sure do remember the family indeed they was a fantastic couple or should i say a family they ran the pub brilliantly never , never ever any trouble beleive me
they kept there pipes cleaned and served brilliant booze in those days i was only on brown and mild then ,but i have progressed since then and we used to have the old joe anna every night going and singing it was a very party pub and most of the ingleby street used it most nights of the week john and george myatt from ickneild port rd and of course myself started our singing there weekly they was a very family orinated people whom ran the pub best people you could ever meet always

yes they was lovely people ,best wishes astonian ;;

I also went to Camden St School and absolutely loved it. I was there during the 1950's. The Head Mistress was Miss Edwards, I remember Mrs Mountford who was a last form teacher and we had french with her, she was a super teacher. There was Miss Gilmore, who did art and maths. Miss Evans and Miss Dry who did cookery. Mrs Gally who did science. Miss Oakton, who I just couldn't take to, I think many people felt the same. I also went to the Camden junior school too.

I have 32 Camden Street as one of the addresses in my family history mine is in the Parish of St Pauls Birmingham, 1851 would this be the same Camden Street please.

hi miss jay
going back in time i would most certainly say that camden street was in the st pauls district as its about a mile from st pauls and knowing the area very well being brought up down and around there its virtualy at the top of warstone lane stroll down warstone lane and you are virtualy in camden street so yes i would say so '
but any way one of our experts whom keep all records of history will probably tell you and confirn it later to you i do not keep reference books or records. my knowledg is all stored in my expereinces of life of travelling if you persue the history of st pauls
you will learn of the under ground walk ways through the sqaure to the church of
st pauls and there drawings on the walls under ground passages drawn by the monks
that used to be there in time gone bye its got alot of history ;
have a nice day best wishes asytonian ,;;;

Camden Street is indeed in the district of St Pauls if you want to learn more about the history of the area I would recommend the books written by Kathleen Dayus who grew up in this area. One of our members family is mentioned in her books. I have an omnibus of Her People, All My Days, Where There's Life, The Best Of Times, on paperback that I have read.The center of the book has several photo's of the area. I would be happy to post it to a member for a small donation to the forum. It is in very good condition.

hi tresario..is there anyway you can post the pic of camden st again please like we can click on it to enlarge..dont worry if not....

many thanks..

The world famous Mamod model steam engine makers were based in Camden St. 1949 era. My steam engine has Camden Street on the box altho I think they are now based in Brierley hill

15j6s6.jpg

Sadly Malins Engineers, the owners of 'Mamod' are no longer at Brierly Hill, they have gone through many changes and are now situated on the Summit Rise Industrial Estate, Smethwick. Malins went into liquidation in Winter 1980. I'm currently researching a lot about this old company and keep in contact with Steve Malins who used to work for the firm. I'm currently trying to find out more about the Camden Street Factory which they used from Autumn 1949 until 1962. Before that they were at St Mary's Row from 1938-49.

Hi maggs
Just browsing through some old threads regarding Camden street and ickneild street where you mentioniond the chippie with the small
Bag of chips that was an aunt to my. Others family and then you mentioned nickname they had two shops one on ickneild street next to Walter smiths the butchers
Where you could get a breasdt of lamb for a tanner then there hickmans the fruit and veg and wild fowl and rabbits for sale as well

And the other was in king Edwards rd the shop on ickneild street spring hill was sold to said cleggs the pototoe merchants in the whole sale market
For the first six months he only sold spuds of every varirtity very cheap no fruit or veg just sounds and years later he moved on
And a old girl friend of mine from Aberdeen street worked for the new owners and ended up marrying the son theladtiheard they azresome where in weoly castle
Best wishes Alan astonian
