buses

Midland Red again but a world away from the glamour of the coaches was the job of the bus conductor. As promised earlier in the Thread, here from my collection is a Midland Red double bank rack of punch tickets as cancelled by the old Bell Punch. In contrast is a smaller rack from Birmingham City Transport. When I get up in the loft I will dig out a punch to photo as well as an Ultimate machine that replaced the Bell Punch on the BCT. Meanwhile here as well is a young me on the Midland Red with a Setright machine in my first year "on the buses". (Note the Brylcreem)

Nice memories Len bet that Handsome Conductor made the Ladies hearts flutter:rolleyes:

That's a nice big model of the Airport bus, lencops. One of five Leyland / Weymann 'Olympic' chassisless (integral) single deckers bought in 1950, 2261 served as the Airport bus for 15 years.
Here it is loading at the city terminus, Queens Drive in the middle of New Street Station.

And wasn't the bus in tip-top condition? Gleaming paintwork we don't see any more. I remember that in the late 1940s and early 1950s, Corporation Bus were repainted every 21/2 years. It's hard to imagine today how cheap manual labour was in those days.

Hi Angeleyes The No 14s ran out of lea hall bus depot I worked there as a mechanic in the 60s

It's Midland Red day at Wythall Museum today, Sunday 12th October. Come along and See the 'Reds' in all their finery, including the latest repaint, Leyland 'LD8' 4031. Several will be operating and giving rides, others will be lined up for inspection. There is a large car park nearby (where a classic car rally is also being held) with a frequent shuttle bus to and from the site. Opening hours are 10:30 - 5:00.

Those coaches are still the early form of bus, Its lovely to see the transition on the early buses from the coaches. I remember seeing an early car looked as though the shafts for the horses were taken away and an engine under a cover put in its place, nothing else had changed. It even still had a canvas body to it and the engine at the front. How Wonderful.

Looking at these old photo's, i remember Stockland Coaches owning a model T Ford charabang that they used to put into the local Erdington show in the Sixties. Don't know what happened to it though.

Here's a lovely painting on a post card of the Midland Red bus I used to catch into Brum in the 1960's/70's.:)
