Bus Accident - Spring Hill 16 March 1949 - Conflicting number of Deaths in reports.

master brummie
Hopefully someone can clarify the actual number of Deaths in this Bus Crash. (Were the number of Deaths 10 or 1)

The birmingham.gov.uk website gives the following information -
On March 16th 1949 a number 8 bus crossing Spring Hill from Monument Road into Icknield Street, collided with a fire engine travelling down Summerhill. The impact of the crash caused the bus to topple over onto the pavement outside Spring Hill Library. One person was killed and over 30 were taken to hospital. An inquest jury returned a verdict of accidental death and found insufficient care caused the crash and both drivers were criticised. The scratch marks made by the bus can still be seen today on the library wall.

Old Ladywood Website (oldladywood.co.uk) with information credited to a Book written by Peter Drake – The Inner Circle.
On the 16 March, 1949 an Inner Circle bus passing Monument Road into Icknield Street, was hit by a fire engine and finished up in the non-fiction shelves of Spring Hill Library. This was one of the worst accidents in the history of municipal public transport in Birmingham, with ten passengers being killed. 1041 (CVP 141), a Daimler COG5 of 1937 had its offside lower saloon ripped out in the accident and as a result was scrapped. Here the fire brigade have hosed down the cobbled road surface to wash away the fuel oil which was spilled after the diesel tank in the bus ruptured.

There is a already, I am sure, posts about this unfortunate incident already on the Forum. A search might yield it for you.a

As I mentioned in the other thread I remember and saw the aftermath of this.
