  • HI folks the server that hosts the site completely died including the Hdd's and backups.
    Luckily i create an offsite backup once a week! this has now been restored so we have lost a few days posts.
    im still fixing things at the moment so bear with me and im still working on all images 90% are fine the others im working on now
    we are now using a backup solution

Burlington St Schools

bluenosedon wot's your name my name is ron hurst i was at burlington st in 1963 as well do you remember john drinkwater or john broom .
 
Interesting that the girls are imitating the position of the teacher's hands. Was this to suggest poise ? Or to stop the girls fidgeting? One girl (the only one) seems to have ignored the instruction. I think the girls are working with modelling clay. Viv.
 
Burlington Street Junior School, date could be early to mid 1950's, the teacher is Mr Eastwood, Would anyone know the name of the lad behind the teacher, photo taken from the astonbrook through astonmanor facebook group

Way before your time Ron and mine, photo was taken around 1954/55....by the way I do have a class photo on my astonbrook through astonmanor facebook group of you, and Ronnie Whitehouse who lived on the otherside of the road from you joined a week or so ago.
 
I went to Burlington Street school in the mid 50s, one teacher I remember clearly is Miss Rock, any others I only remember by my memory being jogged on BHF. Miss Rock is mentioned on several threads on BHF and unanimously receives praise and admiration.
I moved away from Aston between the age of 7or 8 and indeed also have fond memories of this talented teacher as well as for the school which gave me a sound basis for my education.

Little seems to be known about Miss Rock but I have found the following. Edited 28/11/23.

Nora Joyce Minerva Rock (nee Birkbeck) was Born 13/8/1911 3rd quarter 1911 in West Bromwich. and on the 1921 census was living in Cardiff.

The 1939 register has Mrs. Rock living at 147 Byron Road Birmingham (near Small Heath Park). Could be boarding with relatives but no way of easily finding out.

I could find no electoral role records although they may be available on Ancestry.

Mrs. Rock died in 2001 in Solihull.

Brummy-lad, I suspect your Miss Rock was actually a Mrs. In the 1939 register the name Rock is written over her maiden name Birkbeck. Nora J Birkbeck married a Frederick T Rock in 1939 Q4 in Birmingham. The attached article from the Birmingham Mail on 8th August 1981 tells of Nora Rock, a 70 year-old widow, a former teacher and then an author, living in Beaminster Rd Solihull. The probate record for Frederick Thomas Rock who died on 13 May 1978 gives his address as 6 Beaminster Road. Do you recognise her from all those years ago?

Miss Rock or Mrs Rock retired around 1963 which I suspect when she reached 60, therefore I do not think the Miss/Mrs Rock was the one from Burlington Street. but I could be wrong.

Hi Brasscaster, I certainly got that wrong didn't I, I will edit my post. Great newspaper article, I don't recognise her but as I said she was a talented teacher and it does not surprise me that she became a writer. I should have realised that the 'M' on the 1939 register meant 'married' it just looked like somebody's initials. Doh!

Yes she made my life there a nightmare she looked like a witch with that dyed black hair complete with headset I had many a ruler over my hands
