Burlington St Schools

Like you sylvia it was nice to see burlington st school pictures with Mr Eastwood and Mr Barker in them..Mr Eastwood was my teacher l feared him and liked him all at once but he was a good teacher... he not on threw chalk if anyone was talking other things came sailing threw the air what ever was close at hand board eraser etc....always liked Mr Barker he has a quieter approach.....when l went to Burlington st sch we never had class pictures l guess that was because of the war and availability of film....so being as l left dec 1950 we have few pictures of memories.

Hi,

My husband's great great aunt was Hannah Busby, born in 1880, who was a teacher at Burlington Street school.
There have been a couple of lovely posts made on this site about her:-

"Miss Busby had retired by the time I started school but she taught my sisters and brother and lived with her sister in Talford Street, the first house past the corner of Upper Webster and Talford Streets, she always spoke kindly to us children whether she had taught us or not".

"How l remember Burlington St School, happy days, l always enjoyed school never wanted to leave. l started in 1940 and left in 1950 Miss Busby was my first teacher such a dear she was".

Does anyone have any more information about or photos of her?
Many thanks

LooneyLin...Miss Busby was a favourite to all of us kids...she was such a dear also her sister can'nt really remember if l had her as a teacher l started Burlington st infants around 1940 but was'nt there very long before my brother and l were evacuated...my brother would have lessons at their house in Talford street....l.m sure l must have been in her class as l remember she would pass out biscuits at milk time we also had green chequered napkins, to eat off ...trying to make ladies and gents out of us....miss busby knew us all by name and always had a smile for everyone ....Brenda

Brenda,

Many thanks for your posting on Miss Busby - such a wonderful epitaph for a teacher to have been so well liked.

Hi Rod,
is he the one in the top right-hand corner...as I get mixed up with that Raymond, and Raymond Scattergood, whose older brother Colin posts on here...
I think the one on the top right-hand corner is called Raymond, anyway. :)

Dear Sylvia, :)
thanks for clearing up that mystery for me...yes, your Michael may have been in the year above...although the more I think about it, the more familiar his name seems...
as you say, he and others were friendly, and played out with, Lynne Storer, as I did, so perhaps we knew one another outside of school classes.

ray scattergoods older brother is steven Raymond martin marie colin was the youngest

Hi Lyn i just wondered why girls were sent to Lozells in the 60`s i assumed the school closed then according to Aston lad it closed down in 1984 shame it was pulled down as it was a really nice building. The one over the road i know is still there we done pottery and needlework there we did have a class there as well Miss Smith was our teacher then.
Do they use this building for anything now?

hi carol ..lozells girls school closed round about 1971 and holte school was built in wheeler st to take its place (now demolised) but like i said in earlier post during the 1960s we went to burlington st school for cookery needle work and pottery as lozells girls school did not have the facilities and that is the part of burlington st school that is still standing..used a some sort of resources place now i think..

Here is a photo of some of the girls that attended Burlington St in 1962, and a further old photo of the school around the same time.

Burlington Street School class photo.
I think it may have been about 1966 or 1967 as I think (Welsh) Mr. Stevens (teacher in the photo - Ken Barlow lookalike :D ) was my class teacher in the first year of the juniors. One of the classes in the 'new building.'
He used to tip me upside down and threaten to use my long hair to clean out the fish tank!! (wouldn't be allowed now)
I could name many in that photo - I wonder if any read here.

top left - 2nd boy Mohammed Khan - Roy Farnell - Michael Cox - Michael Sayers (?) - Paul Slater (my 1st boyfriend :D ) - Malcolm Ordidge(?) - Raymond Joyce.
Middle row from left: Kitty - Julie Scott (lived in outdoor corner of Webster St.) - me - Angela something(?) - Suzanne Phipps (Copely St.) - Julie something - Deborah something (Brown?) - Pamela Waile (sp?) - Lois Willis - born on same day as me - lived on Parliament St. too, until her parents got the pub corner of Newtown Row and Webster St. or Phillips St. (I get mixed up) - the Waggon & Horses was it?
Bottom Row from left: Kenny Dunbar (always having to have his mouth washed out with carbolic soap :/ ) - Gwendoline Taylor (also lived on Parliament St.) - Sifonessa Hassan - she was a very shy friend - took me back to her house once - another Pamela(??) - Jacqueline Barlow - another Jackie - and can't remember the last lad on the end.

Hi Maz, the boy you named as Michael Sayers is not my son, we left Aston in 1967, but I think we have mentioned before that there is a few months age difference between you and Michael, so perhaps you were in different classes.

sorry Sylvia - I have a feeling the boy was called Michael, but obviously another one.
Wish I could remember - some names are on the tip of my tongue but won't come to mind.
