This is a class photo of my Grandad taken in 1930/1931 at Ellen Street School, did anyone's family go there during those years, maybe they are in the photo??

My Grandad is in the third row back, fourth from the right, handsome little chappy wasn't he :)

he was a handsome little chap wat a lovley picture, i know noone in the photo but just thought i would comment, where is ellen st school

What a brilliant photograph, my late nan could well be on there too.

Ellen street was in Brookfields the four streets that bounded the school were
Pitsford Street, George St West, Prescott Street and Ellen Street, it wasn't far from the Mint in Icknield Street, the school was destroyed in WW11 by bombing.

It would be nice if she was Dib, took me a while to work out which one was my late Grandad, but got there eventually, wasn't sure if it was my nan at first as i've never seen the picture before, found it whilst searching threw my late Nans things, also found his school report from Burberry Street, amazing things to have :)

Grandad was born 1925 he lived on Ellen Street for some time. I only clicked it would be him when an old neighbour said oh i went to Ellen Street same as your Grandad, then i knew it was him, just had to find him lol

Do you know there is a distinct possibility that she is on the far left second row, looks exactly like my cousin Susan (her daughter), can you tell me please, there seems to be some sort of distortion on the posted image going down on the left hand side, is that on the original photograph too, or just on the scan?

It's a scan of the original, i don't quite know why it's gone distorted, didn't realise when i did it, i'll see if i have the original and rescan it, if not will get dad to do it later for me if it's at his, be great if it is her. I notice none of them look particularly happy lol

hi
i never went to ellen st school for schooling, but i went there
as a page boy with four brides maids ,at my aunty mauds wedding

My step mother went to Ellen St in 1907 and was taught by a Miss Holmes. Sorry no photo. Miss Holmes went on to teach at Camden St school, and taught me needlework during the 1950's. she was a tyrant.

Ellen Street, Hockley. I think that my mother is 3rd row, sixth from the right handside with a white bow in her hair.

Ellen Street, the teachers, Mrs Clancy, I remember she went to Africa on holiday, it was very unusual then, Mrs Barrow, Mr Waugh, was very good he use to take us to The Y.H.A. it was the only time we got out of Brum. Mr Smith was the Headmaster, not very nice when it suited him, Mr Holders was the school caretaker (in the mould of Derek Guyler, Fenn street gang tv prog.)
Icknield Street, Mr Northedge the Maths teacher, Mr Urch, a chip on his shoulder about not being the headmaster, Mr Wise (Joey), Mr Nobby Norman art (he was a WW1 soldier) Mr Kitchen, headmaster hard but fair, Mr Fortune, I think I was in the Ist year when one of the kids in the class punched him, the kid was immediately expelled, It was a very unusual event in those days.
The school tokens I remember, can you remember the segregation of people eating dinners at school, people who paid went in 1st and those who could'nt afford them(free dinners went in after. I left in 1966.

Thanks

Ellen Street was my first school, started September 1954 but I was only there a few weeks before I got moved to St Mary's in Handsworth and a few weeks after that to Farm Street. My mother worked at the time and the criteria for the choice of my school was which one was the nearest to the friend or family member who could look after me, 3 new school starts in as many months and still only age of 5, no wonder I'm unstable! (Only joking, I'm pretty near perfect !!??).
Regards,
Peg.
PS I remember vividly attending a Punch & Judy Show at the school, That's the way to do it!

Hi Carolina,
Do you know what year this was taken. I think it was 1953! and I think my sister and me are in the photo.
I will show it to my mother this weekend and although she is 100 in October she has very good eyesight and will spot us if we are in it.
How do you like Stourport? It was the Bridge Cafe that I use to go to, as a teenager and when I was a kid, holidays with my family in a cabin somewhere along the river and got the fishing bug. Is the cafe stil there?
Vinny

Vinny sorry I have only just seen your comment. My mom was born 1913, so it certainly wouldnt have been 1953. Stourport has changed over the years (I have been here since 2001) and there are certainly cafes still over the bridge along with loads of fish and chip shops! Fair still here!

It was Brookfields. We have two threads about the same school so they have now been merged. For the history of the school see post #23. In 1941 the school was severely damaged by bombing and was re-built in 1949.

There is also a specific thread about WW2 bomb damage to the school here https://birminghamhistory.co.uk/forum/index.php?threads/ellen-street-school-air-raids.3786/

Viv.
Brookfields? Surrounded by back-to-backs, the railway and factories - someone had a vivid imagination.
Peg.
