The Bilston Steelworks at Bilston had a long history- it is one that that can be traced back to Bickley's original blast furnace beside a private branch of the canal. Iron smelting ceased in 1979 and the works finally closed in 1983. A part of a final improvement to the works was a the building of a rail served site opposite the works on a former colliery land. This facility, though built, had little or no use. The decision to cease production at Bilston corresponded with the retention of work at Shelton, Stoke on Trent and the new plant at Bilston evidently had no future role.
It was sad that Bilston works closed and the move was part of the end of steel working in the West Midlands.
It was particularly sad that this new facility could not be of use to the midlands industry.
The railway sidings linked, or were to be linked, with the BR main line near the LNWR signal box.
