Bread Vehicles

I remember the bread van delivery in the 1950s with its sloping shelves and wonderful smell of bread. This Handsworth bread delivery is much earlier, and the image is incredibly clear, even down to the loaves of bread. Don't think this, or even the later vans I remember, would pass the required hygiene standards of today. Viv.

I remember when I was a school kid our Co Op bread man had a horse and cart just like that one. The milkman also had a horse and cart. In 1955-56 I worked at the Co-Op bakery in Stechford but by then they had electric vans. I did not like the job so I transferred to the milk in Hall Green which was a lot nearer home . They were still using horses t that time.

A close relative of mine, during the late 1930's, drove one of the bread delivery vans with horse, for Scribbans Bakeries (Scribbans Purity Bread). The unusual thing was that she was female and that I gather was not common at that time. WW2 changed all that!

Here's a photo of Stechford bakery carts from 1953, J.

The Bulls Head Stechford in 1908. Not one, but two bread vans ! One is Hardings, but can't make out the other. Viv.

Still saying that I do not have permission (though signed in), but giving link to other of your videos

A couple of bread delivery vehicles in an earlier post ... I knew of Bradfords but not Pattersons.
Back to black and white and away from the City centre for a view of the now gone Warstock pub as it was in the 1950's. Note the two bakery vans, electric for Pattersons and motor for Bradfords. Were the drivers delivering there or enjoying a swift half of Ansells together or both? Another unknown in a little glimpse of yesteryear life caught on camera.

My mum worked for Bradford's Bakeries, she managed a few of their shops. The shops were Wrights the Bakers. Viv.

I have just had another look at the photos and what I thought was two Electric Vans It looks like one was Electric the other Petrol, put it down to old age (21 and a few months)

Lewis the Bakers, Garrets Green. This company is still going strong, in fact I think we have a member who is a descendent. This image is from their website. Viv

I wonder if it was a Pattisons delivery? Their Corporation Street premises were well known and has a thread on this Forum. As the delivery in the picture is to a pub maybe Pattisons did trade deliveries rather than doorstep?

Thanks Jonob, now you've said that I can can just make out the 'Catherine ...' on the vehicle. Viv.
