It appears that a Fire Station could be based in standard residential housing stock. Here's a photo of the Ravenhurst Street, Camp Hill Fire Station dated 1910. Credit WMFS Heritage Group.

A pompier ladder was made of wood and emanated from France hence the french name. It become known eventually as a hook ladder for climbing between floors in a vertical manner.
Drager/Draeger was a form of breathing apparatus which was developed for a French mine disaster in the early 20th. century. Obviously Birmingham FB was impressed and was a early user.
