Fred returned from injury in a reserve match at St.Andrews and 16,000 turned up
I know I was there
A great player not given his full chance by England (not the only one I may add)
I was there too Steve. He was a great player for us.
"Fred Pickering regarded English football’s annus mirabilis of 1966 as the year that an injury cost him the chance of taking the role which Geoff Hurst famously played in England’s World Cup triumph, and signalled a downturn in his career as one of Everton’s great goalscorers.
Alf Ramsey, the England manager, selected Pickering in his provisional 40-man squad for the global extravaganza. The barnstorming centre-forward – scorer of a hat-trick on his debut for both Everton and England – was vying with Hurst, Roger Hunt and Johnny Byrne to play alongside Jimmy Greaves and Bobby Charlton."

Well, that dates the last time I watched a footie match at the Blues. Jimmy Herriot (whose name was used is the series of vet books) Geoff Vowden and Trevor Hockey. Was there also a Jimmy Greenoff?A bit of BCFC history: 1967/8.
Don't ask me, I know B. all about football. I just found the pic online and thought a few might like to see it! I've only ever watched one football match right through, that was the 1966 world cup on telly (they wouldn't let me turn to another channel!)Well, that dates the last time I watched a footie match at the Blues. My dad once offered (threatened?) to take me to Edgbaston to watch "the cricket". I opted for the more exciting alternative of sitting in the garden watching the lawn grow.Dad took me to see a football match somewhere, my enthusiasm was so great that he only did it once. I haven''t been to see a match since. I sometimes wish that ladies football had become a thing 40 years ago though.
Happy new Year. Bonne année.
Andrew.
