  • HI folks the server that hosts the site completely died including the Hdd's and backups.
    Luckily i create an offsite backup once a week! this has now been restored so we have lost a few days posts.
    im still fixing things at the moment so bear with me and im still working on all images 90% are fine the others im working on now
    we are now using a backup solution

I've been given some photo's that my late dad had, as he was a keen boxing fan the photo's I have are of boxers.
Does anyone know who they are:

Roy Baird & Ray Corbett ring any bells (pardon the pun)?
I think their promotor was Al Lawley and the address on the photo's is 267 Icknield Port Road, B'ham 16.
 
I remember a rumour going around the playground at school that the great Wally Swift was drinking in the Queens Head Pub (see picture below). We ran around to the pub at play-time from school and I recall being lifted-up above the window cill to catch a glimpse of the great man... The rumour was correct. mabz


 
I knew a boxer he owned a shop on the corner of six ways Erdington, his first name was David, cannot recall his second. Boy was he to die for Yummyyyyyyyyyyy...Cat
 
I remember Tommy Jennings from Catherine street Aston he was my friends brother. Dave Bath put a photo on of him last week when he bowled in the same team. He had to give up boxing but I can't remember the reason?. Jean.

I think Jack Hood came from Birmingham, I know he ran a pub at Tanworth- in - Arden.
 
Although not a true Brummie, Pat Cowdell came from the black country and used to work at Fisher & Ludlow's at Castle Bromwich. mabz

Black Country boy Cowdell was one of three English gold medallists in New Zealand, and he would eventually share a ring with two of the greatest featherweights in history.
In 1981, he came within a whisker of dethroning WBC king and Mexican legend Salvador Sanchez, a 15th-round knockdown probably costing him the decision. Four years later, he was sparked in one round by Ghanaian world champion Azumah Nelson.
 
Owen Moran-Born Hospital Street,Hockley,Birmingham.
Born 1884 Died 1949 in Birmingham.
Became World Bantamweight Champion.Fighting many times in America in fights lasting 20 rounds.
Mike Tyson once said Owen was the best pound for pound fighter ever.

Tommy Pardoe was a Birmingham boxer of the 1920s he boxed from where i used to work Metro Cammell he boxed in the Olympic games before turning Pro

He boxed the great Benny Lynch and boxed his ears off but never got the decision

Jonny Mann ( lightwieght ) won 54 (KO 15) + lost 24 (KO 3) + drawn 13 = 91 born birmingham 04-11-1932 after he retired he worked for Turner bros cliveland st aston.
 
JOHNNY PRESCOTT the Upper Thomas St School lad coached by Mr Millner school sports teacher. Remember his Fight with Henry Cooper.
 
Does anyone remember a boxer called John Henry Coope or Cope back in the late 50's early 60's ?
 
Hi, my grandfather was a Birmingham boxer - do you have more photos of the boxers?

Grandfather's name was Len (Tiger) Smith and his proffessional boxing bouts took place during 1926 and 1940. He had over 200 bouts.

Any info/photos PLEASE?? - THANKS!!

Why has no one mentioned Bert Kirby?,British flyweight champion.
His lonsdale belt was hung over the back of a chair in a window somewhere in Newtown Row.Of course,he was an Aston boy,in his time that wasn't in Brum.
 
Johny prescott the boxer came from nechells and he started his training
at the trees pub up stairs and then he moved to the colledge arms
spring hill i,ve known johny for years he made some money from boxing and openend a couple of betting shops around aston and as the years rolled on he went into the steel busines he had a big yard down on victoria rd just pass the swan pub for years prescott steel stock holders was the trading name a frend of ours whomi met afew months ago told me johny is not very well now he has got serious health problems astonian ,;;;;;
 
Johnny used to go out with my best friend back in the early 1960s. I have been to his house once or twice when we all used to go about together. Sorry to hear that he is not well now.

Sorry to hear that Johnny Prescott is not well. I knew him from the clubs. And I knew his partner/wife, Sue, she was a friend of my ex husband. They had a son, JJay I think. Hope he gets better.

Johnny Prescott was an orphan he had a step brother Tony Rankin John came from the Cottage Homes to live in Burlington street with is Nan he was a pupil at Upper Thomas Street, Tony lived in William Henry street Sue's hairdressers shop is called Upper Cuts.

bert was still fit in is prime as i recall him and the lads and also big jackie burns along with his mated the Mc grotie bothers John and leo all three boxed together and trained the kids at the gkn social club up stairs down heath street winson green
and of course watty green followed by his son whom took up boxing
he never was good as is dad thou watty and john prescott went into the bookie business in the early years best wishes astonian ;;
 
hi every one ,
my grandad was a boxer in the thirties ,his name was william n morris
born around 1907 but not sure .. died in 1974
he trained in the midlands (birmingham or the black country area )
my nan told me he was birmingham boxing champion in in the thirties .
he lost an eye in the war years but not through military service,
he continued to fight and spar with one eye , one the pre war boing web site there are too or three with a similar names one from tipton and another
from aston ... if anyone has any information it would be greatfully excepted

A friend of the family--Jack Kirby was a Birmingham boxer before the war (as were one or more of his brothers). Jack had a junk yard in Frankfort street, Hockley in the 1960's. I have searched online in vain for any photos of Jack; none to be found.
