I looked up why it was silenced , BCC say residents in Birmingham moaned about the noise , can you believe it ? It was put out of action about a decade ago

At that time the "quarterly chimes" (and presumably the hourly ones too) had been broken fro around 15 years and theyhad just paid £7257.80 to fix them. Because of noise complaints (5 of them) they were going to silence the chimes between 11pm and 7am at a cost of £150. I don't know if they got them working again before the redevelopment or why they should have been silenced again if they did.
