Any information on Ernest Osborne Bethel, born 1885 abt. Birmingham. Enlisted in Worcestershire Regiment (Special Reserve) 1908. Elder sister named Emily and possible elder brother George S. I have not been able to find any census returns for 1911, 1891 or 1881 for this Bethel family. Did find registered death of Ernest O. Bethel for Sept. Q. 1950 Birmingham Vol. 9c p.269 aged 72 but this would make his date of birth around 1878 some 7 years before his army service papers given age would indicate. Have found no birth details for Ernest Osborne Bethel. Also spelt Ernest Osbourne Bethell on some papers.

Hi Suzanne and Ladylinda,

Many thanks for your (very quick replies) to my posting.

If this is the the Bethel family I'm searching for then it would appear that Erneast was not altogether truthful about his age when he enlisted in the Special Reserve (Worcesters) for some reason. But this Ernest would be the same one I found a death record for (1950 aged 72) and on his service papers he gives his trade as that of Tube drawer (again this would fit with 1911 census). I know he married Violet Robinson (March Q. 1912, Aston) and they had a son John Joseph so again this would fit with the Electorial Rolls information. I think this must be the right Bethel family and your help is much appreciated.
I wonder why Ernest is missing from the 1901 census.

Regards

Peter
