  • HI folks the server that hosts the site completely died including the Hdd's and backups.
    Luckily i create an offsite backup once a week! this has now been restored so we have lost a few days posts.
    im still fixing things at the moment so bear with me and im still working on all images 90% are fine the others im working on now
    we are now using a backup solution

Fabulous picture Lyn :) The surroundings are so different now I don't think I would have recognised it. I definitely prefer the old view! Thanks for posting it.
 
Yes agree pollypops, great photo Lyn. Seeing the streets leading off from the pub makes me realise how much this was once very much part of the community. I only remember it in the 1970's, after much demolition of the surrounding area. Sadly by then it seemed very isolated. But I remember it was still a fantastic treat inside with much of the history still there to see. Lots of tiling and mahogany if memory serves and with the original bar with moveable boards to protect the identity of the drinker. Or did I imagine that after a few too many?? :rolleyes:
 
i love this pic too.and do have vague memories of being taken shopping along the high st up until i was about 5 and then we moved from paddington st to villa st and mom used the lozells road..wheeler st and the flat more for shopping.. viv we have had more than one meet up at the bartons so if you go to any of the meet up threads there are some interior pics of the bartons...shame that the sense of community spirit has now faded...

I've had a go at it, Lyn, but there is not a lot of improvement. There doesn't appear too much additional definition in the image to be revealed.

(I assume it is from a postcard; so there will be a limit as to how much detail is available. But is there any more in the original?)

thanks for having a go phil and chris..no there is no more in the original im afraid..i was given a few old calenders so im cutting out the pub and street pics and scanning them...the more i look the more i find it hard to believe it looked like that....
 
thanks ell and topsy..we still have a telphone box in the same spot although back in the day there used to to two of them...missing in the horses trough that i remember so well...

It was first opened in 1901 and is seen here in 1981 after being restored to it's former magnicent condition.

I have not been to Aston for a while. I heard in the news that this building was attacked in the riots last year. Does anyone know if the pub is still trading? I imagine that the brewery who invested a lot of time and money into the pub must be very disappointed to find that some of the local residents seem hell bent on wrecking the place.
 
yes its still very much up and running and doing very well..i popped in the a couple of months back..thank goodness the problems of last year was a one off..wonderful interior with wall to wall minton tiles..also minton tiles are on the floor round the side of the bar where the stairs are...i do have pic of them somewhere taken when they were discovered when the renovations of 1980s took place..they have since been recovered to preserve them...

That's good to hear. I must make an effort to get over and enjoy a beer in there again. I used to go regularly - well, a couple of times a year, after Oakham Ales re-opened the pub in the early-mid 2000's.

you wont be disapointed...couple of years back i was in the bartons for the unveiling of a large framed photograph of laurel and hardy standing outside the pub in the 50s and got chatting to the ower of oakhams who came down special for the day...really nice person who has turned the bartons around..well thats just in my opinion..

The One show on BBC were in the Bartons tonight talking about Laurel and Hardy's final tour, anyone see it?. I think it said they stayed there, would that be true?..

There is a pic of them outside the Bartons, but whether they stayed there I don't know. Was there last week for a Thai meal and a great pint

Looks like a good plan Lyn.

Hard to imagine it as it was now it looks isolated - a little Island of Old Style Elegance.
 
thanks for your photo of the bartons froth..it really is a wonderful pub inside and out...bernie i can remember the area as it was..there was a shop further up from the bartons on the same side that i used to go to buy my stockings i can see that shop now..up two big wooden steps... such a shame that the hippodrome had to go as both were great landmarks...if any other members have some new photos of the bartons pub we would love to see them...
