Bartholomew Row

Hi, my gtgt grandfather James Jones lived at #3 Bartholomew Row at the time of the 1847 census. His occupation was a railway porter, so I presume he may have worked at Curzon St station over the road. I visited the UK in late 2018 and the developer, Simon Linford, was kind enough to show me around the Bartholomew Row buildings during their renovations (#3 has gone though and the edge of the park is where it was, however Simon commented that the internal layouts were similar for each unit in the row). All the layers had been scraped back to Georgian brick and beams - most fascinating. I’m interested to learn more about the lives of people living there during those years (James and family came out to NZ in 1853), so would appreciate any advice on where to look. Cheers

Welcome Rhys. Our members are sure to be able to offer you advice or help.

How fortunate that you were able to look inside the Curzon Street Building. I wonder if you took photos of the interior while you were there and whether you’d like to share some with us on this Forum. I know members would be eager to see them .

Good luck with your research. Viv.

Hi Viv,
The Curzon St station was fenced off for renovations during my visit, so was not able to get inside. However, I took photos of the interior of the Bartholomew Row buildings and will post some up in the next few days. Rhys

I've tried to upload some photos, however even one jpg of 3Mb is too big for the server to handle. What format and size works best?

Thanks mikejee.
Here are a few photos of the outside of the Bartholomew Row and Fox St buildings taken during our visit in Aug 2018.

And here are the photos taken inside the Bartholomew Row houses during renovation. I was particularly interested in seeing these as the renovators had taken off all the layers of wallpaper, paint, cladding etc down to the original surfaces, which would be similar to how the rooms were when my family lived there in the 1840s.

Totally fascinated with your photos, Rhys. My G-G-grandmother with her mother, widowed after 6 years of marriage, and with two sisters lived in Bartholomew Row and Fox Street between the years 1827 and 1852. These photos have melted me!

I am doing a friends family history, on the 1841 England Census it shows Anthony Buckley, age 65, Coffee House Keeper, Bartholomew Row. Of course it doesn't give a number, I would love to fine out where it was.

He is listed in both the 1841 and 1845 directories at 2 Bartholomew Row , and Sarah Buckley is still running the coffee house in the 1849. This was next to the Golden Horse pub. This is shown in the 1880s map below, and no 2 marked in red

map 1880s showing no 2 Bartholomew row.jpg
