Anyone interested in B C T or Midland Red buses may like to look at two websites. amrtm.org is Aston Manor museum, and www.bammot.org.uk is the Whythall transport museum.

Hi John there is a few of our members who had spoke about the Museum before I'm not sure which Heading its under but you can be sure the answer will be with us very soon. If I know the good folk here:)

I worked for BCT & BMMO in the old days and quite a few others did on the site.

Both Aston Manor Transport Museum at Witton, and The Bus Museum at Wythall are worth a visit. (OK, as a member of both, I'm biased!) See https://the-transport-museum-wythall.fotopic.net/p41112604.html for a taste of Wythall museum's new display hall, anad come along any weekend or to one of the open days (Tomorrow, Sunday 24th June is the next) and look around.

Lloyd - I agree with you with regard to the former having attended the BCT "Standard Day" which was held there on the 21st October to mark the 30th anniversary of their withdrawal from revenue-earning service.

Here are my photos of that event:
https://www.dereksbusphotos.fotopic.net/c1394804.html on my website.

I've yet to pay a visit to the Wythall Transport Museum. Does the museum still lay on special bus services to/from Birmingham City Centre using HERITAGE vehicles?

Many thanks for the info Lloyd and, for supplying the provisional dates of next year's events. I'll be attending one of those....

Wythall Transport Museum

I came across this photo of Guy Arab IV No 2976 JOJ 976 working the 750 service to the museum. The location looks like Hill Street at the junction of Navigation Street overlooking New Street station. I presume this is the designated pick-up point for the museum bus service?

Just realised I finished my Driving test with BCT had to do the Hill start on Hill Street.:)

Wythall Museum open tomorrow, Monday 5th May.

Go by vintage bus!

ROUTE 750 24 March, 5 & 26 May, 25 August, 12 October
Buses will depart on the above dates from central Birmingham at 11.00 and 12.00 from Hill Street, near to Navigation Street, and from the Maypole at 11.20 and 12.20. A return journey to central Birmingham will depart Wythall at 4.00; other journeys will connect with city bound commercial bus services.

Lloyd, a friend of mine was looking for a birthday gift for her husband in the Brum area and she bought him a couple of hours driving a regular bus around
an enclosed site. Not sure where this would be in relation to the City Centre, etc. This chap is a tour guide of some fame in Brum. He has a big interest in buses and trams and he had always wanted to drive a bus if only for an afternoon. Any ideas where this would be? Thanks.

When I worked for the late lamented North Birmingham Busways (R.I.P.) we used to do this for a charity called Spice Adventure (https://www.spiceuk.com/) on Sundays, but all I can say about where is a place called 'Truckstop', sorry I don't know where that is though.

I think it is in Westbrom. My husband attended a first aid at work course there. He can't remember exactly as it was so long ago. Jean.

The main bus Museum for Birmingham is at Wythall.
It so happens that I am celebrating a birthday on Saturday 5 July 2008 and still have 10 seats free on a vintage Birmingham Corporation bus dating from 1953 to take us from Livery Street to the museum for an hour and a half there, before returning to the City centre.
Anyone who is interested is welcome to book a place, but I am asking for a donation of £8 to the website to cover transport and admission to the museum.
Anyone interested? If so, get in while the space is there.
Peter

Thanks for the reply Lloyd. Come to think of it this chap is associated with Spice in Brum. I wonder if this company do offer driving opportunities in this regard . It would be fun for a lot of people I'm sure.

Peter, that sounds like a good adventure....the afternoon on the bus to the Transport Museum etc. Hope everything goes according to plan.

Just a quick mention that Wythall Transport museum will be having its first major operating days of the year this coming Sunday and (more particularly) Monday 12/13 April. A bus will run from Hill St near Navigation St (facing the Town Hall) at 10:30 and 11:30, returning from the museum at 16:00 if you don't want to use (or haven't got) a car.
https://www.bammot.org.uk/eventdays.asp for details.

Another major open day at Wythall Transport Museum tomorrow, Bank Holiday Monday.

"MONDAY, 31st AUGUST THE BIG OPERATING DAY
The Summer Bank Holiday - when everybody wants to get out and about! Glorious weather or not, we run as many buses as we can for your enjoyment, alongside the usual attractions including the miniature steam trains."

Hi Lloyd

The Solihull News did a piece in this weeks issue. I have reproduced it here. It all helps with publicity. It looks a good day out, I might bring my grandkids and pop along myself.

31/01/2012. Sorry I didn't keep a copy of this newspaper article

Glad you enjoyed it! More views of the stars of the show here https://gallery45926.fotopic.net/c1748464.html
Amazing to think most of these vehicles have been restored by amateur enthusiasts from end-of-life hulks saved from the scrapman.

The next major operating day (the last one this year) is:
SUNDAY, 11th OCTOBER
WUMPTY FORTY
In October 1969, the Corporation-owned buses in the heart of the West Midlands were handed over to the West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive (WMPTE - or Wumpty as it became known). This will be a really colourful day celebrating the old Corporation and WMPTE buses with lots of opportunities for bus rides.

Tomorrow, Sunday March 13th 2011, the Aston Manor Transport Museum housed on the former Witton tram depot is holding an open day, possibly its last.
The City Council had decided to withdraw funding which has kept this public attraction in a grade 2 listed historic building, on top of which is demanding rent be paid at commercial rates which the museum cannot afford.
There will be a display of visiting historic vehicles, some of which (and some of the museum's collection) will be offering rides in the locality and to/from the city centre.

If you've ever thought about visiting - this may be your last chance, as unless a financial miracle occurs the museum will close in April, and demolition or drastic rebuilding of the last remaining unaltered tram depot in the city is sure to follow soon after.

The museum is open 11am - 5pm.

Frothy - if you go to the Aston Manor site you can make a pledge which will only be called upon if they manage to raise the money needed to purchase.

just got back from AMTM had a lovely afternoon..went on a trip into town on an old bus and again on a 1940s/50s coach..absolultely wonderful:) it was also great to bump into motorman-mike and Lloyd..if i heard right i think there is a meeting with the council on the 21st of this month but its not looking very good for the museum or the preservation of this historical tram depot...:( will post some pics later on...for those who wish to pledge money to help save it remember you dont send any money just yet..the outcome of the meeting will determine as to wether it will be needed...

Is there a petition we can sign anywhere?
Not that i am aware of - you can voice your opinion to your local councillor though. There will come a time when they want your vote!

I just about remember the trolly bus's when were they withdrawn from service ? early or late 50's.
Coventry Road trolley bus service was replaced by buses in 1952.

it was also great to bump into motorman-mike and Lloyd..
Nice to meet you too, Lyn. A Witton mini-meet!
