what years are we talking about. Havbe looked in Kellys fo 1890 and 1880 , and McCoy are not at no 6 then. If you say about when I can do a closer search

In the 1915 Kellys J.B.McCoy is at no 6. No 23 is listed with five tenants: S.Harold & Co, gen ring makers; Stanley Porter & Co, accountants; Thomas William bird, watch repairer; Austin & Cranfield, watch repairers & Ernest John Hill, chaser. In 1921 all of no 23 is occupied by S.Harold & Co

Sorry. In 1897 the occupants of no 23 were: Evans & Co, jewellers; Edward Lacey, jewell case maker; Charles Foster, gem setter & Thomas Townsend, electroplater

Thank you for looking for me, that has just thrown up another possible family connection though, her older sister married a Lacey, thank you again

just noticed this, my Laceys were Gilt Toy Makers and Jewellers in Brum, although they came originally from Worcestershire. Is the name George Lacey born 1838 a possible connection? Cheers Dave

Good morning. I have a contact via ancestry where we are trying to find a link between her laceys in birmingham and mine mostly in london and essex. Kim Rumpsa in Missouri USA on, her tree has George Lacey born abt 1806 Bronington Worcestershire, died 1881 lived 40 navigation street Birmingham.
census of 1851 says gilt toy with Sarah Wainright born abt 1818 married 1836.

Their son George born 1838, along with father and mother and grandchildren on the census of 1881, 40 navigation street says dad still a jeweller aged 75. son George and grandkids in the trade with one a clockmaker.
Would you like me to put you both in contact? She is obviously a distance relation of yours. Details of census etc below.
regards

Keith Lacey

Kieth.
Have looked at soem directories and the following may be of interest. (Note date is publication date and actual survey date likely to be earlier , at this time possibly more than 1 year):
1858 Dix's directory Listed at 40 Navigation st, no trade given. At this time he would have been of some importance if listed just as a home address.
1862 Corporation directory. Listed as solderer at 40 Navigation st
1867 and 1868 Post Office directory. A George Lacey listed at 43 Navigation st as a greengrocer
1872 PO directory A George Lacey listed at 75 Navigation st as a hosier
1873 Whites directory . A george Lacey at 75 navigation st. Gilt jeweller & hosier
1876 PO directory .Two George Laceys listed, presumably father & son:
40 navigation st, gilt toy solderer (note: "toys" at this time meant fancy items of dress/jewellery, eg buckles etc)
75 navigation st ,hosier
1878 PO directory Only John Lacey, gilt toy solderer at 40 navigation st. No 75 is another person who is a fruiterer
George continues as a gilt toy solderer till at least the 1884 edition, but has gone by 1888

Many thanks. Some tie in. I have the census pics for a few years showing 40 navigation st for George and som. George the elder died in 1888. Some of the elder grandchildren on the census 1881 seem to be involved in the trade.
every bit helps though. I will pass on to Kim in USA.

thanks

Hi Keith

how interesting, yes, definitely the same family! My direct Great Grandfather was Francis Lacey, son of George Lacey Jnr as I call him, b 1838. It's an interesting line moving from the Bromsgrove area of Worcestershire to Birmingham where as you say they moved between Gilt Toys, Jewellery and Hosiery. I had seen the Greengrocerey reference but hadn't quite worked it out yet, although I am sure when times were hard anything was possible.

I have been taking a closer look at the Lacey side over the last couple of years and last year my wife and I travelled to the Malverns which as you will know are in Worcs, very beautiful and in many areas seemingly little changed from the time our Lacey/Caswell ancestors lived there.

Very happy to liaise directly with yourself and/or Kim to look at the connection more closely. Am I allowed to put an email address in here?? In any case my email address is [email protected] I am also on Facebook/Messenger if that is easier although but quite sure how to share that link.

Look forward to hearing from you and Kim,

Dave

Hi Keith

A great visual record of a business in the JQ, now gone. It looks like it was, as you say on Augusta Street, and I think near the junction with Warstone Lane. You can see the two distinctive Victorian buildings on Warstone Lane in the background of the image #4 of post #32. Also the 1960s multi-storey building in 5 of the photos (now refurbished and called the Big Peg) helps to place the garage in today’s Google Streetview. It looks like it was on a fairly substantial site. Here are some views from Streetview. I think the low level buildings to the right of the Big Peg in the second Streetview must be the former site of the garage, now marked as Universal Gems on the satellite view. Viv.
