Aston Manor Transport Museum

Great news is that Walsall Council have granted permission to operate as a transport museum at Shenstone Drive, Aldridge. This is a really positive step as it means that we can open to the public for the first time since being forced out of Witton. The building in Shenstone drive does present some problems for the larger vehicles but hopefully in the near future that can be overcome.

The next event is Sunday 23rd June and is the Dalek Invasion where a number of Doctor Who type daleks will be present along with the usual heritage vehicles.

hi simon good news indeed...just a pity that bcc could not see their way clear to keeping AMTM where it should be...in brum so thanks to walsall council.....i also noticed that the the old witton tram shed is still up for rent so the council have not made any money on it since they turfed all the vehicles about 18 months back....

Yes indeed sad that both the museum was evicted from Brum and the tram shed is lying idle now.

I should have added above that it is planned to reopen to visitors on Tuesday 2nd July and from then on every Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday.

The Dalek Invasion is expected to be popular so advanced tickets are for sale in this case, to make the museum financially viable we need to branch out a bit and this event is an example of this.

i wish it well simon...oh our next forum meet is sat the 27th of july if you are over here...

Sadly Lyn this will be another meet I am forced to miss:culpability: I am over two weekends before that to coincide with an Aston Manor open day on 14th July to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of the trams (the actual anniversary is 4th July). As usual i'm turning it into a long weekend to do other things as well, so much to do in the city and suburbs I never get enough time to fit it all in, never get time to be bored in Brum:courage:

Thanks for adding the updated event poster Dave. Just to add to it the museum is now open from 10.30-16.00 Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year. After a bit of confusion on the Facebook page I should add that vintage buses only run on the dates listed on the event diary. On the 14th July tram 107 (or rather its remains) will be given special importance as we remember 60 years since the trams finished in the city.

Hi Lyn, I might be able to catch up with them but often there are so many people its hard to find somebody even if you know what they look like!! I have listed a full timetable below for the free bus services, I don't know what buses are being used on each service yet but there will definitely be some ex Birmingham City Transport, WMPTE and Midland Red.

Does anyone know who the admin are for the Keep Aston Transport Museum Open on facebook, as it's being bombarded with spam.

Hi Wendy, That page seems to have gotten left behind after the museum opened the other Facebook page, which is the one that contains all the latest news. I mentioned to one of the admins a few months ago that it was causing a few issues, in this case not spam but a couple of folk getting embroiled in some over the top debates and they said that they hadn't been keeping a regular check on it. If you haven't got in touch with them by now I will send an email later.

Simon

No one has replied. The group should be closed if another has opened, it's not a very good advertisment for them.

I agree with you Wendy it is, well was until now, the only one I knew about.

The risk for the museum is that should people start to make complaints to FB they could lose both pages.

The AGM is next week and I will make a suggestion that the page in question be closed as apart from the spam it is causing confusion and diverting people away from the current page which is the important one as it has all the news.

More recently I have heard that the tram tracks & stone set floor are included in the listing which is brilliant as it will prevent any new user from removing them or concreting them over. From the point of view of attracting a new tenant this will of course restrict the use of the interior although there is probably some loophole where they can put chipboard over the tram tracks in a "temporary" manner!!

hi simon...spot on..i had to go past there today and noticed the small side door was open so i went in...couple of guys working in there so i asked if i could take some photos...make the most as this will be the last time we see the old cobbles and tracks which now have a false floor protecting them...as we thought some time ago the building is now going to be turned into an indian wedding venue...im sorry but i just cant see the point in us having history and heritage if it is going to be covered up out of sight so that we cant see it and neither can future generations..just my opinion..well done bcc..

Agree Lyn. Should be seen not under wraps. Hope they realise they'll have to rip up the temporary floor if there's problems with the drains. Viv.

had not thought of that viv...forgot to say but as you can probably see from the pics they are also plaster boarding and hiding the walls as well...if they put in a false ceiling as well all we are left with is basically a cardboard box..
