Artists Who Painted Birmingham Landscapes

Bordesley, Sincere apologies its JAMES Priddy not Norman, mixed up with his son, you should find him on Google, both his painting and lithographs, also George Busby from Solihull who sadly died from cancer a few years ago, did have one of his Calenders which had a particular good one of 2 women chatting over the fence in their old terrace houses with Saltly Gas Works in the background but cannot find it anywhere and another of Washwood Heath Rd , if I can find it I will upload them. Have painted quite a few of Brum myself which you will find amongst other subjects on my profile page under Erics Watercolours. Eric

Thank you, Cookie. I found a few references to James Priddy on auction sites, but sadly none of his pictures. Once in private hands they are closed to the community.

Bordesley Exile when I Googled his name last year it came up with 2 or 3 of his paintings and lithgraphs of Brum City Centre scenes but now all I can find is a coastal water colour which I have attached. He was a prolific painter around the 40's and 50's . His son Norman has a similar style but not so well known. Eric

Bordesley exile, I like that very much, thats my sort of subject but sadly them type of scenes are slowly disappearing. Gas St Basin was a favourite subject of mine in the 80's, but not now with all the alterations its gone through. Eric

Glad you like the painting, Eric. Gas St Basin had lots of charm, but its interesting to see such a sombre interpretation.

David Cox was mentioned in the first post on this thread. I understand that his painting of Harborne High Street is in the National Gallery Dublin. A long way from home!

Follow up on my last post. Have found this on the National Gallery of ireland website. Harborne Church by David Cox, oil on canvass

David Cox was once a member of the RBSA (Royal Bham Society of Artists) and they still have his easel and palette, he spent a lot of time in Wales and painted numerous oils of that country. Eric

shirl i dont know it im afraid..tried to read what it says on the hanging sign as it may give us a clue but cant quite make it out...

I would fit with the c 1889 map. Here it is called the Swan with two necks, but Kellys for 1890 calls it the Swan Vaults, so the name used must have been a bit molten. the trees would fit in, as they are shown on the map, and the building by the nearest tree on the left is presumably The Rainbow pub.

Thank you, Carolina & Mike. The 1889 map shows a curve but the artist makes the road look quite straight, so thats rather odd.

Not sure what you mean by older the Robert Calvert who lives in Tamworth is the Birmingham Artist he has painted many pictures of Brum. I think the one most of us know is of the Bull Ring Market and St Martins.

oh ok,,maybe im wrong, will post the prints on here,,some of them are signed and numbered,,are they worth anything?? not that im going to sell them,,but just to know

I suspect that they are not worth that much (I do hope that I am wrong) it would be worth a check on Ebay, to see if there are any on sale there, I have an original Calvert I have no idea what it is worth

How lucky are you to have an original. His work seems to be getting more popular I have several postcards of his work.

Out of interest do you have postcard of the trams a the Lickeys did he do more than one print, I have seen a print of two trams in the scene at the lickeys, was there a print of just one tram in the scene
