Arthur Leeson Webb

master brummie
Ok so im looking onto information on Arthur Leeson Webb
After searching on ancestry ( if I am correct) I followed a trail which seems he ended up in st edwards home coleshill then off to canada again if its the same arthur. The only reason why im doubting this is because there is a marrage certificate in canada ststing his mothers maiden name is Jennie carrigan should be Emily Jane Sanders im confused I have either have the wrong Arthur or emily jane is not his real mother.
So further digging i found a baptism stating emily is his mother. Really confused now.
Any opnions would be really appreciated.

I am not on my laptop at the moment but will, if no one else looks first, look later. However you could see if there is a birth registered with mmn Carrigan and also one for mmn Sanders.
Wonder if he lied because of where Emily ended up??

My thoughts exactly
Other thing I thought of was did he use his canada moms name? Ive no idea what happened to him when he reached canada he states hes a farmer which from my research is where the kids were put to work when tree reached canada. Or was he raised in a children home maybe and wouldnt have an adopted mother.

She ends up in a lunacy asylum which must be why he ends up in a home and being sent to Canada.
That is why I suspect he may have used his Canadian "mothers" name.
If you have world wide Ancestry you could see if you can find Jennie Carrigan on the 1921 Canadian census.
MWS it may be on familysearch.

Arthur may not have known his mother’s name?

His father William died in 1905, and his mother was admitted to the Asylum in 1910. Interesting that he lists Anglican as his religion and yet he was taken in by a Catholic Home.

You can also sign in to ancestry canada with your uk log in and search and see the 1921 census for free.

There is a possible Arthur Webb in 1921 but he is listed a lodger, no family.

Arthur was born April 1900 and would be 21 at the time of the Canadian Census, and also in May 1921 at his marriage.

Long shot? I think 21 was the age at which he would be released from any indenture. Maybe he was lodging at a house where his future wife was the housemaid.

I think there are 4 ladies called Jennie Corrigan on the 1921 census. Interestingly there is also one on Ancestry incoming passenger list who gives her UK address as Canada House London.

Thats correct @MWS she remarries not long after then straight after gives birth to my grandad then again to his brother but he doesnt live long cot death.
Must of tipped her over the edge as shes lost another child before with previous husband.
1911 she shows up in asylum
Her husband william shows up living alone.
What i do know is my grandad was raised by someone else a close friend I think and her husband. So arthur not being his must been sent to edwards its a sad story so far im following. Interesting though. Wonder why his much older brother didnt take him in Ive yet to research him.
My grandad was raised not knowing about his mom and didnt know his dad was close by around the corner wasnt until a telegram arrived to my grandad to tell him his mom was seriously ill and he needed to the asylum. She lived a great age of 82 would like to try see if I could obtain her records from asylum.

I did think of this and have a little look but then thought its her maiden name it wouldnt be carrigan we wouldnt be looking for would it if she was married which she most likely was.

Good suggestion but why know his dads but not his moms? There are so many questions...
I know it was an embarrassment to the family a relative being in an asylum my grandad kept it a secret from all his children they all thought nan was the lady who raised him. When my nan died my uncle gave my dad an old tin with paperwork and in there was the telegram from the asylum and thats what led me to do the family tree.

Is it this one? interesting states hes a farmer like on his wedding cert. Fits the age bracket for being married as it states he is married plus age.
But why does he state 1919 as immigration year when it was 1912 he departed.

Thanks for the additional info. I have a particular interest in Child Emigration and therefore in the story concerning Arthur.

It was a puzzle to me as to how Arthur was taken in by a Catholic Home when both his father and mother were Anglicans. (St James, Handsworth). It was very unusual, but not impossible, that a Catholic Home would take in an Anglican. However as his mother married William Steeles in 1908, and his mother was in the Asylum in 1911, his stepfather William Steeles may have been a Catholic.

Is it your understanding that Arthur sailed on the Corsican in 1912?

On the record for his mother's marriage to William Webb in 1897 her status was shown as widowed. Had she been married before?

Yeah if its the correct Arthur Ive found.
I found this on the BHC website which names the ship and date. Further research I found the home he would of been sent to over in Canada. St George home wonder if they have any records.
