ARP Decontamination Sqn

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
In the 1939 Register for Tiverton Road, Longbridge, one of my very distance relations has the subsidiary note alongside his entry which says ARP Decontamination Sqn. I am guessing that this presumably refers to a possible threat of a gas attack and someone who was specifically trained / designated to deal with the after effects of this type of attack. Or does anyone else know anything different please? His daytime occupation was stated to be a motor driver and he would have been 28 years old at the onset of WW2.

Anyone know what exactly they did ? Mustard laundries ? Was that some sort of process ? Viv

I expect they weren’t used to their fullest extent in WW2. In any case, for most people, to reach a centre within 20 minutes to avoid the serious effects of gas must have been ambitious. I expect these were built as a reaction to what had been learned during WW1. Viv.

Excellent, Pedro, the only thing remaining is how many and where were they situated in Brum please? One must have been fairly close to Tiverton Road (Selly Park). And would they have coped had a real gas attack taken place wihout a vast expeniture of money? Some specialised first aid knowledge would have helped, but beyond that, it seems that no specialised chemicals would have been used.
