Alum Rock Road Shops

The bottom picture, in post 417, is here, post 805, with suggestions.

The top photo has a similar one here, post 287, and is dated 1912.
I expect the third one is here somewhere. ;)

A duplicate small thread:

The middle photo of post #417 is Alum Rock Road just before the junction with Clipston Rd (left) and Jackson Rd (right).

Must be the beginning of the 19th century as you can still fields in the distance. The clump of trees just beyond the kink in the road must be where the Brook Hill pub was built.

Don't think it's the width of the roads it's the lack of parked cars that make them look wider. Except the first photo of 410 where it's wider beyond the junction because The Rock hadn't been built.

Can anyone remember the name of the cinema in the dip in Alum Rock Rd and the car sales next door

Hi Solihull Chic,
Thanks for your response, I think the Polish couple were in the house next to Mrs Lamb second house up the road on the left. The Newbury children are on the pic they lived opposite to Malcom.
I think there may be some confusion with some of the names unless I have misread your post, because little Stuart is 2nd from left back row next to Brian Toplis, and Jimmy is in the Front row 2nd from the left next to Johnny Sparks. I have listed all the ones that I can remember for you in columns so that you and Malcom can have a look and see if you can add any and it may refresh Malcoms memory, there are a fair few blanks (?) although I can remember a lot of the faces names were, and are still not my strongest point to my eternal embarrassment. I think we used to call Malc' and his bike "MAXIES TAXI".
Kind regards Chris Bryan

Hi John,
it seems that a lot of the pics on the site have gone for a duck, I think someone hacked into the site or something like that. However hopefully here is the Anthony Road Coronation Pic

Ho. The dread of the dentist when we were kids. The two dentists in Bowyer Road were just a few doors up from the Rock Pub one was Kings can't remember the other.

It was Mr Ewing.Very genial Scot!

OHhhhhhhhhhhhh,Iremember Mr Ewing.Got my molar half way and said he couldn't get it my farther and to try and push it back in.this was in the late 50s

My sister lived at 505 in the sixties with her young family. I think the last shop before the houses was Sam Saunders newsagent and general store.
Hi just saw your message. is your sister called Doris. Was she married to someone called Arthur. If so I remember her and the young family well

Sad news she passed away seven years ago Christmas coming. Did you know her and Arthur got divorced. She remarried
in 1972 and had a very happy life. Lyn her daughter lives in Chicago and the boys still live in the midlands.

That is sad. Yes I knew she got divorced and I have a photo somewhere of her holding lynn in her back garden. She always looked immaculate despite having four children to look after x

She stayed immaculate all her life. I must have seen you at sometime all those years ago as I was always at her house.

I’m sure you did. I remember when she was pregnant with one of the boys, she fainted in the garden and my brother carried her into the house. They also had a dig called ruffle

I wanted to do some wood modelling when I was about ten and went into Armstrong's without any real idea of what I wanted to make, so I asked for "some wood". Mr Armstrong spent ages helping me plan the project and cutting wood for it. Try that in Homebase!

I remember the Armstrongs. There was the father and two sons. I lived on the same section in Clodeshall Road. I have walked past that wood yard thousands of times. My mum and dad always called it "the woodyard". Happy days

My Mom used to go to Jester's to buy broken biscuits from the tins - we could get lots for our money. My uncle used to say if they have run out, ask them to break somemore!

My mum also went to Jesters. there was a young lad who was working there who used to sort out most of the customer queries . I was also sent on messages to the butchers a few doors down. Mum would write a note of what she wanted, pop money into my purse / pocket. I was quite small but was told to stand opposite the butchers and the butchers boy would see me through the window and come out to cross me over the main busy road. He would then cross me back over after purchases had been made.

In later years, mum used to go to the hairdressers run by Janice.

I lived at 896; the corner house of a terrace at the junction with Chetwynd Road, moving there as a 9 year old with my parents and grandmother in 1964. What is now flats next door used to be a Jehovah's Witness Mission which adjoined a betting shop. On the corner at the junction with St. Joseph's Road was a small general grocery shop run by two ladies who always knew I would be coming in after school every day for my 2d packet of KP salted nuts and used to place them on the counter before I said anything!
In the opposite direction (moving towards the Capitol Bridge) was Len's the greengrocer and Haxeltine's the bakery together with Griffiths and Fullard which was near the Capitol and which stocked school uniforms. Also near there was a Triang toy shop.
The Pelham shopping area consisited of (on the Pelham pub side of the road): Hawtins the record shop which was one of the last of the original shops to disappear and a pet shop right by the bridge where the lady there used to give me a free egg every time we shopped for dog biscuits.
On the opposite side of the road near the roundabout with Sladefield Road, was Heighways the newsagent (Pink scented Rhunana cachous was my grandmother's favourite sweet from there); Les Bryant the butcher; the post office; Huins and Freeman Hardy and Willis the shoe shops and Hunts which was a house furnishings store which, like Hawtins, remained for a considerable number of years.

Hi, My dad was the manager of McGauley's on Alum Rock Road and we lived above the shop at the time. Me and my sister went to St Saviours and this was at the end of the 60's / till 1977 when Mr McGauley closed the branch. My Dads name was Kenneth (Ken) Wildman and my mom was Trena Wildman. I / we would love to hear from anyone who remembers them around this time?
