My 3x great grandmother was Catherine Allen born circa 1807 in B'ham. She married a Thomas Cannon (from Ireland) on 24 August 1828 at St Martin's. In 1827/8 at B'ham, Thomas was charged with the crime of B*st*rdy against Catherine. The charge was later dropped, possibly upon his marriage to Catherine.

I don't know anything about Catherine Allen's parents or siblings - as you probably know all too well, there's a lot of Allens who lived in Brum in the early 19thC! I've yet to rifle through the Parish Registers... :-\

Catherine died on 12 February 1850 of 'diarrhorea 3 weeks certified' at 'Stanyard's Building, Key Hill' and was buried in Key Hill cemetery.

The only census Catherine figured on was 1841 when the family were living at Lower Camden Street.

I know I've rambled a bit but can you tie my Catherine in with your lot Barrie?

Janny

Hi Janny. My Birmingham Allen's are all descended from George Allen and Julia Jordan who married in Birmingham on 10 Feb 1823. I have'nt really gone into this side of the family much, I've spent most of me time looking for me elusive Granny. :) I will look through what I've got, and see if there might be a connection.

Seeing the recent discussion reminded me that my grandmother was Diana Clifford Allen, daughter of William Allen, who In was told kept a shop in Cecil Street. I've never found anyone of that name in the directories until they moved to Ellen Street in about 1910. On 6 June 1907, my gran married Augustus Harry Walker, of 46 St Stephens' Street at St Stephen's church.
I'm not really into family history, but someone might find a connection there.

I notice that you mention in your quest for info the surnames Allen and Hands. I have both names among ancestors and have been told of a possible link by another Allen researcher between the two families. Interested to know what your connection is ?

Hi! I am trying to find an Allen family for my 2 x great grandmother, Eliza Allen (1852/3-1895) who married a brass caster, Abraham Poole in 1872. They lived at 22 Nechells Park Road. Eliza died at 42 years old. Abraham went on to marry a Julia Elizabeth Harris who hailed from Canning Town. Do you have any info re Eliza? TIA
