Could anyone advise on how to access adoption records. A recently family death has unearthed an unknown family member who was given up for adoption at birth. The person in question would be 46 years of age now. Would like to know how far I can go before any contact has to be established.

Only the person that was adopted has the right to access adoption records. You could try posting on adoption sites leaving details and see if any contact is made or a person of that name is looking for contact. You could also write to the prope authority in the district were the child was adopted from to see what your rights are.

You will find that the authorities will not entertain talking to anyone except the adopted persons direct next of kin, if parents are deceased it could be a
brother or sister of the adopted person.

Hi Gazzo
This link may help you to find the best course of action to take about the adoption. If you can prove a connection as a birth family relative to the person who was adopted you can apply to have your name put on the contact register at the GRO.

This other link may give you more info about a change in the adoption laws for birth parents or families.
