Not actually of Birmingham, but he spent time in Winson Green Prison as a Conscientious Objector during the Second World War. I was leafing through an anthology called 'Don't You Know There's A War On' by Jonathan Croall and found a chapter written by his wife Olive. It sounds pretty awful, but the other prisoners were very kind to him, she says.
