Too true Josey... I was one of those 9 kids. We had a hard but happy childhood. I remember going around those houses in that yard, scraping a stick under the window ledges to find Daddy longlegs.. If i saw a spider now i would run a mile..I was too young to remember the wood yard but i remember we had to share a toilet between 3 houses. I remember the newspaper on the table then it would be cut up into squares for the nail on the toilet door...

and there was a lady called maggie living up there ; a little lady in size as i recall also a guy called frank whom was the safe cracker ;

hi astonian
we lived up the opening behind the shop his name was mr jones or jens i think.
i only knew the neighbours by their surnames. I remember a small lady in size but i think her name was Mrs Underhill. she had a daughter called June and a son called John. She may have had other children but those two were the only ones i knew. I dont remember the Safe Cracker but i can assure you that there were many rogues up our Street. Mrs Owen lived in one of the houses with the gardens at the front, she used to take bets for the neighbours. Many the time i had to take one for my dad. There are a few other neighbours that I knew ; The Tenbys, Cheslins, Summerfields & Mrs Stringer who owned the fruit shop opposite the Queens Head pub (she used to give us the rotten fruit because she felt sorry for us!). There was also a little shop next to the Queens I can't remember the name of the man who owned it but he used to run us down the road for calling him name (he was a miserable old bugger!).
Do you remeber Mr Jackson who lived up our yard? He fell over the raiilway trying to find a brick to support the wheel on his motorbike, us kids were playing in the yard at the time, & our dad & Mr Power run down to try & get to him.
When I got married, we got a little back to back house in Peel St behind Mrs Forcebrook's shop, So I ended up back where I started in Winson Green!!!

Hiya Astonian, the Little lady you mention who lived up the top of the yard was Maggie Howarth and Frank when he wasn't in the clink was her boyfriend. We used to pop in for a cuppa now and then and though I shudder to think of it now a safe with its back ripped out in the front room was nothing unusual, but in those days it was strictly mums the word.

hi ampegboy

Hi Josie, the memory is a little on the foggy side these days so I can't be certain but I think it was quite sometime after you had left. I think it was 1965/66 to about 1968 she was a friend of my then girlfriend Brenda. I heard on the grapevine that sadly Maggie fell victim to the big C and died about ten years ago. Also I have vague recollections of a family called Mason who lived a couple of doors away, am I right thinking there were two sisters? Ampegboy.

ampegboy
the masons lived next door to us the two girls was sandra who was one of my best friends and her sister veronica
there was brothers but cant remember their names
josie

Back at ya Astonian, Remember that weekend well, think we all sailed a bit close to the wind back then.
Saw Johnny Dunkley a few years back he's still living in Quinton and yes I remember the neighbours in the long gardens too, I was one of them I lived at number 26, the one with the big tree at the end of the garden. Don't suppose you remember Billy Wyleman by any chance? he lived round the corner in Peel Street and we used to knock about in the Route 66 or the Pub on the corner of Peel St.
Would love to hear from him again.

hi ampegboy
nice to know you knew my old mate jonny and billy and the gang i will contact you shortly and i do beleie i can recall you

Hi i have only just joined this site but i remember living in aberdeen street until the houses were demolished and we went to live in bartley green. We lived at number 24 with the big long gardens, we lived next door to mary dunkley. I remember when mary.s daughter had a baby boy thst she named after jeff astle.. from WBA. I recall he came to the house after the christening. My Mom and Dad were Ray and Shirley Tuzzio. we were John, Susan, Jillian and David. Timmy came along just before we moved. I remember the Smarts, Sandra was my friend, as was ValerieTildesley, we used to go to Foundry Road School...... walking past the prison and passing patients from the mental hospital on our way.
On the other side of us were the Okeefes who we lived next door to ...... Sean, Robert, Lynette . We used to play two balls in the entry by mrs dunkleys door. There was a black family that moved into the end house with two small children bonnie and yawnie....... they used to sit on our step waiting for my dad to come home cos he worked for bluebird toffees and always bought sweets home. Dad usd to go to the Smiths Arm, Queens Head and Sir Robert Peel pubs. On sundays we would run up the street to tell dad his dinner was ready. Shorthouses and Jones were the shops in the street..... where we would have to go to get stuff addd to the book ready to pay when dad had payday....... happy days! I also remeber Blowers the newsagent on the corner by Winson Green Road ... a penny bubly gum and a packet of potatoe puffs every night after school was my treat. Does anybody else remember running round the block (peel street) and playing in the big entry up the road. Look forward to hesring from you Sue Tuzzio now Hinton.
