A Tarlington - artist

Di.Poppitt

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
I've got six framed prints of watercolours by A Tarlington, they were being sold in the Library shop about 20 years go. He painted lots of local scenes, the originals are held by the Library, none of my prints are of The Beehive Taven but I don't know how many of the originals they hold.

These paintings by A Tarlington were the subject of a 1984 calendar entitled “Victorian Birmingham”. There were 6 images of various Birmingham street scenes. Could we match up the places for A, B, C & D please ? Then I shall edit this post. Thanks. Viv.

Magnificent prints. There are others and some details of Tarlington's work in this thread.

Thanks Alan. I’ve copied a couple of the posts to this thread as they mention a number of Birmingham paintings by the artist. Viv.

Spargone
No mention of Star Clothing, but at that time it would normally be listed under the name of the owner. In fact nos 5 & 6 were Frederick Phillip Levi, tailor, and no 1 was William Henry Warner, butcher, which fits , while no 2 was William Coolin, secondhand bookseller, which could fit the look of the window

Here's the Birmingham Library online catalogue entry that covers the A Tarlington pictures held by them.:

"75512 [A Collection of water colour drawings, sepia sketches, etc., by A. and W. Tarlington and Warren Blackham, of old buildings and streets in Birmingham, circa 1870-80. (Timmins collection.)] fol. [c. 1870-80].

NOTE. — These drawings were made under the direction of the late Mr. Samuel Timmins
during a period of great changes in the appearance of the town, due to the reconstruction
of Colmore Row and Edmund Street, the construction of Corporation Street and John
Bright Street, and the extension of New Street Station.”

Albert Tarlington (1896-1973) lived in Sparkhill, latterly in Erasmus Road (off Stratford Rd, opposite the garage near Kyotts Lake Rd). He came from an artistic family, his father and at least one brother were artists of one kind or another. Albert became an engineer, so his artistry was possibly only a hobby later in life. He died in Penrhos, Llanymynech, Montgomeryshire, Wales, possibly his retirement home.

Viv, would you by chance know who the publisher on the calendar was? We are trying find them or 5he availability of prints. Anything would be appreciated!

Sorry Richard I really can’t remember. Possibly Birmingham Post & Mail. But not certain. I’ve seen a few auction houses sell them individually but not seen the calendar. Viv.

'Old Houses in Deritend' includes the Golden Lion Inn, now in Cannon Hill Park.
'High Street Deritend and Floodgate Street' includes the Old Leather Bottle pub, demolished around 1900.

The 1880 Kellys does not list an A Allen or a Locket in hill St. the 1882 and 1983 editions lists an Alfred Allen, furniture dealer between St Judes and New Inkleys, which fits with the painting.

Viv, I have looked on line and found very little. Mike seems to have found much of it. I’ll check with the Post & Mail. Such beautiful work and so little coverage. Thank you!
