Birmingham Nightclubs of the Past - Memories

John I saw Rod Stewart at the Mayfair, Probably 1970/71. You could virtually stand next to the bands if you were at the front of the stage.

Central Grammar, International School Tile Cross

There is a group of 'old boys' - quite literally - from Central from the 1963/64 year to around 1971. There are about 17/18 in the group. I first spotted some of my old friends (Post 79 Page 4). Initially three or four of us met up but in April this year it was about 17. Malcolm Robinson (Dub)

Stuart, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I have dug out the Battery Magazine but my scanner is currently up the shoot. I have also found a couple of photos of the lab. As soon as I can I will post them here. Sorry again. Malcolm

Stuart, I will have a hunt around over Christmas and see if I can find any other Battery stuff and I'll get back in touch in early January. I can't remember your dad's car accident but I seem to remember him saying one year he had just bought a new car (Escort of course) and on the way to your...

Sorry for the delay in responding. I can't remember those two lads Paul and Terry but I tended to stay with the lads in my year. I must have seen you at school obviously but particularly because I was one of the milk monitors for Mr Owens class for most of that year. If you are interested I have...

Peter, I started in the lab about 1972/3 after working at Charles Clifford's Dogpool Lane. I worked in the lab there with a guy called Denis Spence and we both left at the same time. Denis got a job pretty quickly at the Battery and he got me a job there a few months later in the chem lab. I...

Stuart, I was very sad to learn that your dad has passed away. He was a great colleague. I remember he always used to light up one of his fags when he came out of the lab into the sample room and you can bet your life within a minute or so someone would come in from the casting shop or refinery...

Hi, Alan was in the year above me at Blakenhale I basically knew him because I was on a school trip to Belgium with him in 1962 and he lived in Hadland Road near my second cousins the Farmers. There seems to be two lads who had eye injuries reading through all this thread again. Steven White who...

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I knew a few people around your area. Sally Knight, Karen Lapthorne and beautiful girl who used to live opposite the newsagent at the bottom of the shops. I used to stand for hours outside the newsagent waiting for her to come out, which she rarely...

Does anyone from Central remember The Rio at the Yew Tree. Sunday night was the 'progressive/rock' night. I first went with a gang of mates from school around 1969/70. The music was superb, the DJ excellent. There were also several notable personalities there too. A Stones fan, a Who fan and a...

Hi Dave, You are up early. Sam Farmer (who died about 1956) was my maternal grandmother's brother. So the Farmer children were my mom's cousins and I guess my second cousins. I know there was quite a lot of them. One of the daughters Hazel used to baby sit me when I was about 3/4. The only...

I knew Allan because I was on a school trip to Belgium with him about 1962/63, he was in the fourth year then and I was in the third. Someone kicked a bottle on the beach and it hit him across the forehead and gave him a bad cut, I'm sure he had to have stitches. Alan may have known Arnold...

Hi, Sorry I have only just come across your post today. I worked in the lab from about 1974/75 to 1981. I worked with Ian Watkins and Bill Beavan and Bill's brother Les. I think there are a couple of photos of the lab on here and an article about it in an old newspaper cutting. I have a couple...

Dave, Did you know my cousin Keith from Blakenhale or senior school? I have been trying to trace him or his brothers Derek, Kevin and Graham for a few weeks now with no luck. Last time I saw him as I said when we talked before was at their house in Garretts Green Lane.

Hi Dave, We never did the Cabin or the Comberton outdoor but very occassionally we hunted in the bins around the Chestnuts at the bottom of Hollyfaste. Trouble was it was a bit near home - we lived opposite the College - so you might gets spotted by a neighbour. Did 'Vincents' the ice cream...

My parents have died now so I can confess this. Did anyone else collect pop bottles out of the bins in Poolway Park, just up the Hollyfaste Road near Blakenhale School to collect the 3d back off the bottle to buy a 'jubbley'. I used to like the Vimto ones. Malcolm
