Hi Lyn

I found the following on FMP Newspaper section. From the Evening Telegraph, Tayside, Scotland, Wednesday, 24th May 1899

"Gallant Rescue by Football Player

The well-known Wolverhampton football player, George Harper, who is at present living in Small Heath, was responsible for a gallant rescue from drowning. Two boys were playing with a number of companions near an old clay pit when they fell into the water. The other lads ran away, but, meeting Harper, told him what had happened. Without attempting to remove his clothing he ran to the spot, and, jumping into the water, succeeded in recovering the boy Harvey, who told him that Spooner had sunk. Harper once again returned to the water, and found the other lad at the bottom of the pit in an unconscious condition. He at once conveyed the lad home, where a doctor was called in, but his condition is still critical. The water where the accident happened is 7 or 8 feet deep, with a clayey foundation."

Hello Lyn, Just came across your message regarding George Harper the football player - My grandmother, Elsie was his daughter who was raised by her Grandmother (George's mother Drusilla who ran the pawn brokers shop) Sadly I don't have that much info on George himself, but obviously have stories relating to Elsie's life.
