    Pagett , Canal Dredging

Jane, Old thread this but I knew I had seen the name Pagett on the forum somewhere. Don't know if this is of interest but I have just found my grandfather Edward William Smith in the 1921 Census - last of a long line of Worcester-born narrowboat men, working as a boatman for A Pagett, Canal...

    Ladywell Baths

My Bodfish ancestors seemed to congregate in the Ladywell area in the 1850s as they moved in from villages in North Oxfordshire and South Northamptonshire, presumably to find better paid work.

    Canals of Birmingham

You can re-live the walk with the aid of the beautiful NLS Maps website - https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=18.0&lat=52.44439&lon=-1.97682&layers=168&b=3 - hope that works - slide the blue button around. The tunnel mouth is at the SW corner of the brickworks and most of the canal line is...

    Best Emily

Lisa (and your BHF support team), 133cM DNA match 2nd/3rd cousin Bill Burton here. I've only just picked up on this Best Family thread - I was still working on the Speaking Stile Walk one! I've had a quick look at my Smith ancestors that lived and worked on the canals and can offer you an...

    Lordswood Boys' Technical School

In my time (1960-67) for my first three years the classes were labelled N, F, J, S - grouped oldest to youngest as Roger says - I never did quite work it out but I thought N covered those with birthdays in Sep/Oct/Nov - F covered Dec/Jan/Feb - J seemed to cover only Mar/Apr - and my stream S...

    Lordswood Boys' Technical School

I joined the Astronomical Society when I first started at Lordswood in 1960 but constructionally, things happened so slowly, I lost interest in the project. I did find the attached though in a scan of the September 1969 school magazine - see post 263. I presume the observatory was demolished in...

    Palser Family

Lisa - Welcome to the forum. Attached a bit of old mapping of Speaking Stile Walk (with house numbers) which will be of interest. I was born at 1 back of 66 Irving St, my grandparents were at 1 back of 64, and lots of aunts, uncles and cousins on the other side of the road. - Bill

It's no longer active - like the Old Ladywood site - I found a lot of pages though archived on https://archive.org/ - search for "winsongreentobrookfields" - Bill

    Anyone recognise this building?

Hillman Imp doesn't look much like a rare Australian convertible - more like an Imp that's had the roof cut off! Also looks to have no engine, no rear cross-member to support the engine and the engine cover looks detached. Poor old Imp.

    Hop picking

My Hintons, John & Matilda (nee James), were married at Martley church in 1869 but by 1881 they had left the rural life of Martley and moved to Osler Street in Ladywood. Their daughter Margaret met and married my great-great-uncle George Burton and they and their 9 children lived in Barford...

    OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

One of the reasons I've been a veggie for the last 42 years - conditions for the animals and carcasses must be better nowadays?
