Blacks. Birmingham factory probably in the Saltley / Nechells area

Thank you all for your interest and wisdom. I like the idea of Blacksmith as a statement of trade more than the name of a company.
I was too young when my grandfather died to have any information from him. Shame I couldn't have asked - but I suppose we all say that don't we.

Blacks short for blacksmith as mentioned seems the most appropriate.

I think you are probably right MWS and its a type of job. It’s a metal finish as in ‘black or blackened steel’. Not sure what the process is for it though.

Well, there was Black Japanning, quite a common process and also chemical Blackning or Phosphating. All treatments for steel and iron items
