Bordesley green

I worked at the Post Office Supplies depot in Third Avenue for many years. In the mid 1980s the payroll was stolen and the thieves ran down the gully to their getaway car in fourth avenue. we used to walk to a lovely park by East Birmingham Hospital where we would eat our lunch.
Hiya
I was born and bred in Bordesley Green, Third Ave, and went to Marlborough Rd senior school.

Wow, just been past that row of shops and Gardners is still there (in name anywat)!!! Surrounded by 'change' and huge Bangladisation.

How did they DO that? Is this a record. To my certain knowledge they have been a Milk Bar/Sweet shop since 1955....amazing stamina and fortitude.
I just found this site when looking for information about Gardner’s Milk Bar. My grandmother knew Tony Gardner well and used to take me there as a small child. I have memories of a heavenly place with red and chrome stools all along the bar. When I came to Australia and saw there were ‘milk bars’ everywhere I was so excited until I realised it just means corner shop here (and they’re an endangered species too now). But then I saw your post (which could well be 11 years old?) that said Gardner’s was still there!! Can this be true? And could it still possibly be? If so, is there any photographic evidence and what is it now? Any info very gratefully received

This memory was from a friend who grew up in Bordesley Green:

I remember Bourne’s sweet shop. In fact I can remember the smell of that shop. We used to rush out of school to buy sweets. My favourite was a penny Cadbury chocolate bar which I would take home and melt. Do you remember the sweet shop on Bordesley Green just round the corner from Palace Road and it also sold exercise books which being the girlie swot I am I would prefer to sweets. Do you remember Bluebird toffees? No wonder I’ve got diabetes

I worked occasionally in the corner shop at Drummond Rd. One day when I was serving a middle aged man came in and said to my surprise - " Good Morning. I'm the man from Mars!" I was a bit surprised until I realised he was their rep of course.

I was born in 1947 and just have a memory of sweet rationing after the war. When we had a Mars Bar it was sliced up and shared out.

The site you are talking about was a workshop that specialised in Jaguar repairs and rebuilds.
It was run by a very jovial Jamaican chap who told me that he was going to do up old Models and ship them abroad because they fetch more money there.
He decided to increase his workshop space by knocking down a few walls, unfortunately the walls were load bearing and the upstairs fell into the downstairs, wrecking all his "stock".
I never saw him after that.

hi folks can anyone remember dallaways garage on the Bordesley green between blakeland street and blake lane in the 70,s and 60,s ?

Yes Phil, the garage belonged to my great uncle, Charles Dallaway. We lived in Blakeland St. They were very successful had wedding cars and also did wedding photography.

WALLY CROOK
I worked in the garage from 1971 - 74 when it was three storeys at the front and two at the rear. Originally an old bakery I believe. The left hand part looking from the main BG was open plan from front to rear with 2 floors above that were rooms we never used. My old boss Brian Edwards moved out mid 70's. Wally Crooks did the same sort of thing at premises in Lichfield Rd Aston prompting his move to BG (so I am told)! Anybody remember that?

I know the cycle shop you meant, d38uh32. H. Craig at the top of the BG opposite Nurse's. My son used to buy stuff from there in the early 60's. I think the main attraction were his girlie pics and calendars hanging on the walls! :)

An old mate of mine had a barber shop close-by, Bob Marsden's. Bob's 87 now and was still very sprightly last time I saw him a couple of years ago. Like most barbers in those days, he only knew one style - short back and sides! But he was cheap.:) Another mate of mine, Dougie Bates, owned the newsagents shop near Norwood Road.

Nephrititi... I opened my first bank account at that Municipal bank on the corner of Bordesley Green Road.
I was born at 81 Cherrywood Rd in 1955 and remember the bank at the top of the Rd known locally as little cherrywood because it ran from the bank on the lights to Fisher and Ludlows then doglegged down from there past the cafe on the corner to the local Shop on the corner run by Jennie Ward and her mom and opposite was a little shop run by 2 I think sisters who used to make sandwiches for the local factories like Meteor Ford , Holden Paints etc.
many happy memories, running to the cafe to get faggot and peas for my mom in a bowl from my childhood and my first savings was in that bank, Thank you all for bringing that back for me.
We left Cherrywood Road in 65 to 66 due to compulsory purchase order.

Well after many phone calls to Brum City Council and digging through their web site , i was no nearer finding out what the place names around "The Legs" monument represented, and then in a blinding flash of inspiration ( or perspiration ) i realised that it, and photos that i have of another such monument have (placename,INTERCHANGE. They are in fact i think placed by Centro Travel , the one at Saltley actually bears the Centro logo .
So i will endeavour to glean information from them , i will i think have to go into their office which is of course in Bordesley. Max
Hi ,as an ex greener I think you'll find that the small bus office at Bordesley Green is just National express bus group formally West Midland Travel formally Birmingham City Transport and are and where bus companies, Whereas Centro actually is the controlling body responsible for transport ie Trains Stations and buses.
As I remember you will find Centro at last I heard at Summer Lane Bham City centre.
Hope this helps in case you have no joy there.

Don`t know who you were learning to dance with !

Our lessons were a joint venture with the boys at Alston Road. How it was decided who would partner/escort who at the actual Dance, I don`t know - names drawn out of a hat, maybe. My invite came from Gregory Price. Don`t recall seeing much of him on the night - can only imagine he wasn`t too happy to be partnered with me - probably had his eye on a shorter girl, as I was taller than most of the boys at that time.

Still in Bordesley Green - Belchers Lane Playing Field was a facility we used to share with Alston Road Boys (and other schools). Is that still there and used for the same purpose ?
Hi Annie,
After I left Little Green Lane school, I went to Alston Road School, a place I detested.
Don’t remember the ‘Dance’, but after spending 4 great years at LGL, I cannot ever recall attending any social gathering connected with Alston Road School.
I did however have my wedding reception meal at the Juniors hall upon marrying my first wife.
hope you are well, Ray.

I'm ok, Ray... Thanks for asking.

Prior to the dance at Alston Road School, we had once a week dance lessons for six weeks and then received a printed invitation card... I still have mine somewhere... it came from Greg Price, who, if I'm remembering correctly, was also ex Little Green Lane and he had a twin brother... they were in the same year as us.

Like you, I loved my time at LGL.

Does anyone remember Mr Law's store corner of Pretoria road and Bordesley Green. I worked there part time on Saturday when I was 14yrs old in 1964-1965 I was useless at it, but Mr Frank Law was so helpful. I remember trying to weigh the bacon slices and was scared stiff cos I had no idea what to do ; At Christmas he would shut the shop early, get the local kids in, my younger sister said she would be handed a raffle ticket then all the kids would run around the shop and find the item that matched he number. Mr Law used to give my dear mom food on tick until the end of the week, that helped her out, dear Mr Law.I remember at Christmas Santa's sleigh along the Bordesley Green Rd, us kids would be so excited to see him, they were on their way to East B'ham Hospital.
I remember the corner shop on Pretoria Road. My grandparents, Alf and Lily Webb lived at, I think it was number 35. I was born in 1961 and used to get the bus from Sheldon with my mom and brother, most Saturdays to visit. I remember the wooden drawers in the shop that had loose sugar etc in them ! Can't say I really enjoyed our Saturday visits as grandad would not let us have the lights on until we literally couldn't see ! and he had Grandstand on tv all afternoon. I did enjoy deliberately messing up the hearth so that I could use the companion set - we had gas fires at home - Ah, long ago...............

Bordesley Green Hospital was on my area. When ever I had an early morning job there. My first stop was Judys Cafe. Her full English was the bees knees. You would walk in and Judy would say the works Terry, I would say yes please. The works was whatever Judy had in the kitchen. Bacon, sausage, beans, tomatoes, mushrooms, black pudding, eggs at least two, chips if she had cut too many for the previous day, fried bread and toast.

Found a picture of Billy Ponds School of Dancing , I went there a couple of times with my sisters

I learnt to dance at Billy Ponds and was a regular there on Saturday nights, until I progressed to going into town.
Happy days!

Annie
Annie,

It was almost that attending Billy Ponds was a precursor/badge of achievement to give you confidence and self-esteem to go to town, Top rank, Mayfair, Barbarellas, etc
Happy nights spent in the town in those days.

Hi Phil, I don’t really know. My Mom had an older brother, named Harry Dallaway, he had a family but I don’t know their names.
