Tailors' Quarter in Birmingham

I Am Nico

master brummie
Can anyone tell me if there was a Tailors' Quarter/Clothing Industry Quarter/Jewish, prefixing both of these, please?
In my birth family search it comes up in conversation.
Possibly around Sherlock Street or Ashted Row as they came up.

I understand it was around Alama Street in Newtown, I think hats were made in that area too. I belive that there we also a few working in Balsall Heath. A Tailor told me how they worked in the back to back and terrace houses. Some family specialised in cutting out, then the suit would be passed across the road to be sewn up, then back to someone else for the lining. He said one house only did pressing and ironing while other did the buttons.

Sounded like a production line of collaborative working

I seem to remember that one of the renovated "Back-to-Backs" in Hurst St. was once occupied by a tailor? I can't find my book at the moment.
rosie.

Nico ,in 1911 there is an Isaac Phillips age 35b Germany living in Irving Street.(Tailor. waistcoats)
I found no surname Seman.
Going along the other entries there were many diferent surnames,Tailors , Tailoresses, Tailors pressers,Tailors cutters living in Irving street many from Russia with christian names such as Isaac, Abraham and Esther which may mean they were of the Jewish faith.

Thank you Alberta. I think, possibly the Seman family were not Tailors. But in the clothing trade somehow.
I will follow up Isaac. 'My' Phillips was a Tailor's Salesman. Thank you.
