Birmingham Nightclubs of the Past - Memories

The Carlton in Erdington, frequently. I saw a reference to the Plaza in Rookery Road, Handsworth earlier - I seem to recall going there. There was another place by a lake which I can't for the life of me remember. I left Birmingham when I was 21 so I barely find my way round it let alone recall some of these places now. David Q

Was it The Chateau Impney at Droitwich , The Tower Ballroom Edgbaston ?

Anyone got any memories and information about nighclubs in Brum, from any time last century?

Some names of ones that I remember and went to...

Samanthas (was over Silver Blades ice skating rink in Hurst? St)

Pollyannas (Newhall? St.)

The Locarno (definitely Hurst St. with the Bali Hai one at the back)
I remember this band..
John Kerton fronted the successful U.K. function band Red Sun who were the resident band at the Birmingham Locarno for eight years. https://www.brumbeat.net/andicaps.htm

Just found this out
The Tower Ballroom closes its doors at the end of 2005 after more than 50 years https://www.saga.co.uk/1057fm/pages/lisEvent.asp?id=5373
went there once...

Snobs (didn't like that one much)

There was one in the same road where Bingley Hall was (can't remember what it was called..brain's not working too good lately :D) saw Herbie Hancock there...and Deaf School, and AC/DC  (not my choice...just a crowd I was with at the time)

Any more? ...or any memories? :)
The one in the same road as Bingley Hall I think was Barbarellas

I do remember barbarellas, though I am the same as you, have forgotten a lot of things from those days, so just can not remember where it was. It could have been on the same street as the old Bingley Hall.

Please can someone put me out of my befuddled misery? What was the Jam House called before becoming the Jam House? Many sophisticated evenings drinking cocktails there in the 80s...maybe too many as I cannot recall it's name. Thanks in anticipation.

There was a night club on Smallbrook Ringway at the junction of Hurst St in the early 70's. Entrance was in the Hurst St Subway. What was it called? Anyone remember?

In the 70s it was called La Dolce Vita. I worked there from 1973-4.

Anyone young enough to remember the EL SOMBRERO on the Bristol Rd in the late 50s & the club at the back with PENGUENO who could get you anything you wanted ,Within reason

Does anybody remember the Mayfair Suite. I think it was somewhere in the bullring. There was also The Rainbow Room above the Co OP.

I went to The Mayfair a couple of times , my apprenticeship was served at The West End , Locarno , The Whisky , The Elbow Room , the Rainbow was frowned upon by my peers from these places , mainly because of the clientele at that time . Hence I never went there

The Carlton Club in Erdington, forerunner of Mother’s which I can’t remember. But at The Carlton I can remember seeing, The Crickets, Dave Berry and the Cruisers, Screaming Lord Sutch and the Savages, he had everything going for him but could not sing for toffee. There were local bands in embryo such as Carl Wayne and the Vikings, Denny Lane and the Diplomats, Roy Wood was there and so was Jeff Lynne. I still have the pink membership card somewhere in the house. I live in Bolton now

Some good names from the past mentioned there John , some of which are still going today . That's done by knowing the trade inside out , something which bands nowadays know nothing about

Can someone please tidy this up, I know its in a very poor condition. All of us are from the Locarno and its taken inMARGATE 1964.jpg Margate 1964. Thanks

Only noticed it this morning and had a go but probably beyond my skills and equipment ...
When I unpeeled the sellotape on the top of the pic there was just a dark shape underneath and no features.
I couldn't resolve the feet at the bottom of the pic so pushed some sand on them.
I had difficulty with the background in the top of the pic so inserted another part of Margate beach and sea front by the promenade ...
edit ... ps ... realised later that the shape under the sellotape is the back of a women's head

The Rainbow Room. Yes remember it well, used to go weekly. I think it used to specialise in a lot of blues. I can't remember the Mayfair Suit was that around in the mid 60's also?
